6000 Holiday Flights Cancelled, Here’s How To Get Refunded or Rebooked

As winter storms rip through the United States over the holidays, more than 6000 flights have been canceled with an even higher number of delays. With this being the busiest season for holiday travel since 2019, hundreds of thousands of passengers are finding themselves stranded, delayed, and rerouted.

With all of the stress and pressure that last-minute cancellations come with, especially at Christmas time, here is an easy-to-read guide of your passenger rights, including when you should be refunded and when the airlines owe you extra benefits for the delays.

How To Get A Full Refund If Your Flight Is Canceled

If your flight is canceled, even for reasons like weather, and you no longer wish to travel, the airline owes you a full refund, despite what they might say to you at the counter.

The U.S Department of Transportation’s Aviation consumer protection page clearly posts that consumers are entitled to a full refund, not a voucher, if the airline cancels their flight and they no longer want to travel. The government’s policy includes cancellations for bad weather, pilot shortages, mechanical issues, and a list of other reasons.

Even if you have booked a basic-economy or non-refundable ticket, the government’s strict policy states a full refund must still be given.

If your flight has been canceled and you are no longer traveling or you are going to drive or take a train there instead, here is how you will obtain your refund:
- Contact your airline via phone, email or online chat and demand your refund. As protocol, they will always try and offer you a voucher first. Do not accept.
- If they still will not refund you, you can file a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation here

How To Get Rebooked If Flight is Canceled

If your flight has been canceled, but you’re still headed to mom’s house for some turkey dinner, the airlines are responsible to rebook you on the next available flight. This rebooking process is mostly automatic and may happen moments after your flight is canceled. Be sure to check your airline’s app and your email to see if an alternative route has been set up for you.

If your flight has not been automatically rebooked, but you got a cancelation notice, follow the instructions in the text or email on how to rebook.

If you are already at the airport when your flight gets canceled, and you are not automatically rebooked or cannot contact your airline via phone/chat, you can also try and approach your airline’s customer service desk, as agents will be rebooking and handing our vouchers there are well.

More passenger rights and tips for canceled flights include:
- The airline must rebook you on the next available flight free of charge
- If the cancellation has you waiting overnight, airlines will provide you with hotel vouchers, and shuttle or transportation vouchers to and from the accommodation. Airlines that provide accommodations due to canceled or delayed flights are Amerian, Delta, Southwest, United, Jet Blue, Alaska, and Hawaiian.
- If a hotel room is not available, some U.S. airlines like Delta will offer an airline credit for the value of the average hotel price to be used for future flights.
- If the cancellation has resulted in a delay of more than 3 hours, you are also entitled to meal vouchers
- Some airlines, like JetBlue, offer additional credits for delays. If the flight delay announcement happens before boarding, passengers are entitled to a $50-$200 credit depending on the time frame of the delay. If the delay happens after boarding, the credit amounts are $100-$250 depending on the time frame of the delay.
If They Have Bumped You Because Of Overbooking

Some passengers may still be negatively affected by holiday flights this week, and not because of storm cancellations, but instead of airlines overbooking flights.

If an airline sells more tickets than there are seats available on the plane, which is, unfortunately, a common practice of U.S.-based airlines, they need to pay you big money for the inconvenience.

If you agree to get bumped on a new flight and the airline can get you to your final destination between one and two hours of your original arrival time, you are entitled to 200% of your one-way fare cost or $775, whichever amount is lower.

If the airline can get you to your final destination more than two hours after your original arrival time (or four hours for international flights), or if the airline cannot make any alternative travel plans for you, the minimum compensation is 400% of your one-way fare or $1,550, whichever amount is lower.

Your Travel Insurance Will Have Extra Perks and Coverage

I’ve been a full-time traveler for over 8 years now and I can tell you honestly, I ALWAYS have travel insurance, no matter if it’s a short domestic trip or an extended international journey.

If you are canceled or delayed, check your travel insurance terms and conditions, as they will likely have additional payouts and benefits over and above those of the airline. Some will give you extra cash for sundry items like toothpaste and shampoo for delays, while others might provide additional accommodation options if your airline is impossible to reach to do high call volumes.

Cancun Traffic Gets So Chaotic Travelers Forced To Walk To Airport

Massive traffic jams due to road work on the way to Cancun International Airport have forced travelers to get out of their vehicles, drag their bags, and run to make it on time to their flights since Wednesday, the 21st.

Local authorities made the decision to remodel the roads on Luis Donaldo Colosio and Kukulkan Boulevards, in the hotel zone of Cancun, in order to keep the popular destination’s infrastructure up to date with its growing popularity.

However, the Cancun Airport recently crushed a record of 719 flights, and hotels were all but sold out, meaning there were thousands of travelers all trying to get to the airport in the midst of this massive construction project.

Because of the road construction, the route to the airport had heavy traffic congestion that affected around 10,000 passengers. According to the information shared by the Mexican news site El Financiero, many travelers didn’t make it in time and lost their flights, and nearly 40 flights had delays.

Through social media, users shared shocking videos of tourists—including families with babies and strollers— pushing their bags and moving faster than all the vehicles stuck in long lines of up to three hours long while heading to the airport.

“It took us 4 hours to go three miles,” wrote a user who shared a video of the experience on Tiktok. Another user commented: “It was horrible. I was dressed to land in Houston in 35-degree weather. I walked 3 miles with my 50 lb suitcase, carry-on, and giant purse.”

Fortunately, the Benito Juárez major, Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, announced late on Thursday night that new updates and measures have been taken to solve the traffic chaos.

Mexican Government Taking Measures

As reported by The Cancun Sun, the Mexican government has already deployed 62 police officers in the area to control traffic and prevent bottlenecks.

“Thanks to the cooperation between federal, state, and municipal authorities, we have managed to normalize fluid vehicular traffic on Blvd Colosio, which allowed the arrival and departure of tourists from the Cancun International Airport without setbacks,” said major Peralta on Twitter.

The road work that caused the chaotic traffic experience this week was part of a new project to optimize traffic flow and expand roads, but the result was catastrophic for tourists, especially during peak hours. The new measures will allow the construction to continue but also includes new road alternatives from Cancun to the international airport to create a better traffic flow.

Even though it is not the first time that Cancun’s traffic congestion has made it to the news, hopefully, this new strategy will solve the problem, and travelers can go back to a normal travel experience in the Mexican Caribbean.

When Travelers Should Leave Their Hotel

Travelers visiting Cancun right now or in the following days should be extra cautious. Cancun International airport is more crowded than ever, the traffic jam has been a nightmare, and now many flights connecting to the United States and Canada have been canceled due to bad weather in the north.

Hotels and resort transport operators are reporting that travelers need to leave 5 hours before their flights in order to make sure they make it to the airport in time. Travelers are advised to leave as early as possible to make sure the traffic situation doesn’t hinder their chances of making it home.

Even though the entry process at Cancun airport has been simplified and significantly optimized this year, these unexpected events have added stress and angst for travelers who don’t want to miss their flights. Airlines have also tried to provide solutions and alternatives for passengers.

Now that the new measures have been implemented, during the following days, the travel experience should improve. However, it’s wise to take precautions like heading very early to the airport, even if it means saying goodbye to the pristine Caribbean waters sooner than expected. The Most Relaxing Puerto Vallarta Vacation Is Only A 5 Minute Drive From The Airport

As many of us know, getting the chance to truly unwind while on vacation can sometimes prove more difficult than expected. Just because you’ve arrived in a beautiful area with sun and sand doesn’t mean your brain suddenly turns off the constant hum of everyday life. However, I just completely unplugged for the first time in a long time after spending a few days at the most relaxing resort in Puerto Vallarta, The Westin, which is only a quick five-minute drive from the airport.

Trying To Unwind Can Actually Be Stressful

Have you ever tried to relax? The statement itself is a bit of an oxymoron. Try to relax? Attempting to relax and being unsuccessful can be its own source of stress. Relaxing should be effortless, and at The Westin, it was.

To really understand how rare this experience was for me, I’ve got to let you in on a secret…

I love my job.

No, seriously. I have never been as passionate about anything else in my entire life, and I am so grateful to be able to say that! However, it can be hard to unwind or unplug when you are so invested and interested in something. I don’t really see this as a downside because it’s what I am most passionate about.

Still, regardless of how I feel about it, it’s wise to unplug every now and then for mental health and relaxation. Lucky for me, The Westin didn’t give me a choice! Even if I tried to work (which I did), I was able to relax more than I had in months.

The Westin Puerto Vallarta sits on the grounds of an old palm tree farm, and great care is taken to preserve them. Each tree is numbered and looked after carefully.

Worry-Free From The Start

I was lucky enough to have the row to myself on the flight in, and things only got easier from there. Getting through customs in Puerto Vallarta is a breeze, and transport from the airport was arranged through The Westin.

When I walked outside, my driver was already waiting for me with a sign that had my name on it. A quick 5-minute drive later, and I was greeted by The Westin’s beautiful lobby and signature White Tea scent. My senses were pleasantly overwhelmed, and I felt like I’d entered another world.

One quick tip for navigating Puerto Vallarta’s airport — make sure you don’t fall for any of the timeshare people’s tactics in the “shark tank.” People inside the airport will try to convince you that they are your transport, don’t fall for it. Walk all the way outside of the airport, where the actual transport operators will be waiting.

The scale of the building, the perfect weather, and the wonderful immediate service made everything feel surreal. My bags were quickly whisked away to be taken to my room, check-in took all of two minutes, and I was in my room shortly after. I’d only landed just over thirty minutes prior and was already enjoying a cup of afternoon tea while taking in the incredible view from my balcony.

A Dinner That Will Ground You, Literally

As a solo traveler and borderline introvert, getting to know new people can sometimes be challenging. After a long day of flying, my energy levels can make it difficult to put the effort forth to get to know people I’ve never met or even catch up with those that I already know. That all changed during the first evening’s dinner at The Westin.

Our group (who had only met virtually up to this point) met in the lobby before walking through the gorgeous property to our dinner location. The Westin sits on what used to be a palm tree farm, and great effort was taken to preserve the trees. Even the pools were built around existing trees. The whole resort feels cozy — as if you’re closed off from the entire world, so the walk already made the evening feel special.

When we reached our dinner spot, the ambiance really kicked in. We had booked a ‘sunset picnic’ right on the lawn overlooking the beach, and I instantly knew it was going to be a great night. Getting down closer to the ground gave the entire experience a much more intimate feel.

Smiles were plenty, and conversation was easy. This was definitely the best way to get to know people, and would be perfect for families and friends to enjoy together and catch up. The string lights over the table lit up as the sun went down, and fireworks started a short way down the beach, adding a whole other element to the evening as we enjoyed our desserts. As the night came to a close, I knew I’d made some good friends that I would keep beyond the trip.

After wrapping up dinner, I went back to my room to end the night in the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve ever been in. (I later found out that The Westin has their own signature Heavenly® Beds, no wonder I slept so well!) When I go back to The Westin (and I will be going back), I will absolutely be booking a sunset picnic again.

Sometimes The Best Way To Relax Is With Intentional Stress

I am the kind of person who finds it challenging to sit still. Lounging on a beach all day is hard for me, and I find it much more enjoyable to go hiking, snorkeling, or, in this trip’s case, ziplining. As a person with a healthy fear of heights, I can confidently say that my stress levels were raised!

After about a 20-minute scenic ride, we arrived at Canopy River, where we ziplined across the mountains 11 times before taking a donkey ride back to the top. If you find yourself here, make sure to check out Jorullo Bridge after your ziplining tour. It’s the longest suspension bridge in the world, and offers some great views!

The tallest zipline was 500ft in the air and 1500ft long! Certainly enough to kick up my cortisol levels, but it was a blast! After the initial fear wore off, the views offered while suspended between two mountains were almost therapeutic. The rest of my day felt so calm after starting it off with such a rush. In fact, I spent several hours lounging next to the pool, reading a book. Something I usually wouldn’t be able to do for very long.

The Most Relaxing Day Of 2022

It’s been a busy year for me, and life has changed drastically since the start of 2022. I set many goals for myself, and I’ve basically worked nonstop to meet them. In the midst of that, it’s been difficult to allow myself to relax. However, during my third day at The Westin, I reached a level of tranquility I hadn’t achieved in ages.

This will likely come as a surprise to no one, but my most relaxing day of 2022 began with a trip to The Westin Spa. I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say it was the best massage of my life. Before beginning, I was asked if I had any areas that needed special attention, and I definitely did. My neck has been stiff for months, and I’ve been too busy with life to really do anything about it. My therapist nodded and said they would take care of it, and they did! For the first time in months, I could bend my neck completely without any pain.

After the massage, I spent another hour taking advantage of the steam room, sauna, and sleep room, where I was able to fall asleep for about 30 minutes. When I finally decided to leave (and it took some convincing!), I felt like I was floating. Not many things can get me to completely unwind, but The Westin Spa (thankfully) gave me no choice.

Tips For A Relaxing Time In Downtown Puerto Vallarta

While I can’t recommend The Westin enough, it’s worth getting off the property to explore some of the surrounding areas. Staying at The Westin makes this very easy. To check out the immediate area, I’d recommend renting a Move Well bike from the front desk. The roads and sidewalks around the resort are all very bike friendly, and it’s the perfect way to wake yourself back up after a life-changing massage.

For a more unique experience, I highly recommend checking out downtown Puerto Vallarta, particularly the Malecón, a 12-block boardwalk along the ocean. One of the coolest parts about downtown is that every street is historic, as they have all retained their original cobblestone structure.

After the sun goes down, I suggest taking an after-dark taco tour with Vallarta Food Tours. My new favorite way to take in a new place is via food tours, and this was one of my favorite parts of the trip. Just like the food tour I recently took in Old San Juan, it was a history lesson in disguise, and I felt like I knew the city on a much deeper level afterward. Plus, as a solo traveler, food tours are a fantastic way to see more of the city with a group to meet new people and make friends!

Going with a group, and especially with a guide, is one of the most relaxing ways to take in a new place. You are with someone who knows the area really well, and you don’t have to worry about checking your phone every few seconds to make sure you are going in the right direction. Plus, walking around at night alone can be uncomfortable. Taking a food tour with a group is a great way to see the city at night when it is most alive without going it alone.

I’ll Be Back

This was one of the best trips — and certainly the most relaxing — that I have ever taken. Since the airport was only 5 minutes away and the hotel could arrange transport, I had zero worry about making it to the airport on time. I still feel refreshed, and I’ve been home for a week! I went to Puerto Vallarta not knowing what to expect, and, as usual, life surprised me. I left with a refreshed mind and body, wonderful new friends, and an appreciation for fully unplugging every once in a while.

One thing is certain. I can’t wait to go back.

An immense winter storm is sweeping the U.S. and will bring record-low temperatures to many across the country. This will be a serious issue for travelers heading off to their Christmas destinations, as President Biden has just issued a ‘leave now’ warning to those with travel plans. Blizzard conditions will put travel plans at risk for those in the Great Plains and the Midwest, so any travelers who can leave early should do so. Otherwise, their trips may have to be canceled.

Some areas already feel the effects of the winter storm, such as Minneapolis-St. Paul airport in Minnesota who reported receiving 7.4 inches of snow in 24 hours, a record for the airport. As the storm progresses, more areas in the region will see travel and daily life disrupted. According to the National Weather Service, a “Powerful winter storm [will] produce widespread disruptive and potentially crippling impacts across the central and eastern United States,” and “Record-breaking cold and life-threatening wind chills over the Great Plains [will] overspread the eastern half of the Nation by Friday.”

The storm is expected to cause significant travel disruptions, hence Biden’s latest warning. According to the President, the White House has tried to contact 26 governors in affected areas to offer federal assistance after meeting with the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

According to the NWS, areas across the Interior Northeast, Great Lakes, and Upper Midwest will be especially affected. 1-2” per hour snowfall rates are expected, and wind gusts of over 50 miles per hour will create extremely low to near-zero visibility conditions. That being said, if the storm is already affecting your area or your intended destination’s area, travelers are advised to stay home and shelter in place. If travelers ignore this advice and try to get through the storm in their vehicles, they risk becoming stranded in their cars, which would be one of the most dangerous situations they could put themselves in amid life-threatening cold temperatures.

As verified in new research conducted by BBC News, Thailand is the number one pick for both Americans (including Canadians) and Europeans when planning a trip to Southeast Asia. Squaremouth found that travelers spent 44% more on the 25 most expensive destinations compared to any other country, while the average trip cost to these destinations was over $11,000, almost three times more than the average traveler spent this year.

10. Monaco
