India Opens For Tourism Allowing International Flights and Restoring E-Visas

India became the latest country this week to start the process of welcoming back tourists. After two long years, the South Asian nation has now reopened for international commercial flights and tourists can apply for a visa or an e-visa to visit for non-essential reasons.

The Indian government also announced this week that it would be lifting the travel restrictions that have been in place since March of 2020, in order to revive its heavy-hit tourism industry.

Here’s what we know so far about India’s tourism reopening.

India’s Ongoing Flight Ban Removed On March 27th

As of March 27, 2022, India’s ongoing ban on international flights has been removed and the country is now welcoming international commercial flights carrying passengers for non-essential and tourism-based travel. This is the last step that was needed for India to begin fully reopening for international tourism.

Over the past two years, flights in India were operating under an air travel bubble model. With this system, flights carrying travelers from a number of destinations were banned from crossing the country’s borders.

Following the removal of this week’s flight ban, major flight routes between Dubai and the destinations of New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru have been given the go-ahead.

According to an official for India’s Director General of Civil Aviation, over 60 international airlines serving travelers from 41 countries across the globe will resume weekly flight services to major destinations throughout India. There are also plans to ramp up flights on Virgin Atlantic between London and New Delhi by June 2022.

More International Flights Means Shift To Full Reopening Of International Tourism To India

Officials in India started easing travel entry requirements in early 2022. In February of this year, the country dropped the mandatory quarantine and testing on arrival for fully vaccinated travelers.

Despite the easing of some entry restrictions, there was still an international flight ban in place which meant that tourist numbers remained very low throughout the country.

Updated Entry Requirements For Travelers To India

Under the new guidance, vaccinated as well as unvaccinated travelers from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and more can travel to India for non-essential reasons.

Here are the current entry requirements for all travelers to India:
- All passengers aged 5 and over must fill out the official self-declaration health form at the Air Suvidha portal at least 72 hours before departure.
- Unvaccinated travelers can enter quarantine-free if they have a negative Covid PCR test result taken no later than 72 hours from travel.
- Fully vaccinated travelers (a full course of a two-dose or one-dose vaccine) are exempt from pre-departure testing requirements
- Testing requirements don’t apply to travelers under the age of 5
- All international travelers to India might be subject to a random Covid test upon arrival, but this will be a rare occurrence.
India’s E-Visa Program Also Restored

Now, tourists with a visa or an e-visa can travel to India for non-essential purposes.

On top of the easing of entry restrictions and the removal of the flight ban, the Indian government has restored its 5-year tourist e-visa program which they suspended in March 2020.

India will restart its ten-year visa program for US tourists and they will also allow Japanese tourists to apply for a ten-year tourist visa. You can learn more about India’s travel visa program here.

CDC Travel Advisory For India

In its weekly travel update on Tuesday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention dropped its health advisory for India from High (Level 3) to Low (Level 1).

Mexico’s most popular tourist destination, Cancun, will experience a rush of 3 million tourists for Easter this year, selling out all of the hotels in the city. Quintana Roo projects hotel occupancy above 85% for Easter with a risk of being completely booked by the time of the holiday. The influx of tourists is expected to cause an economic boom for the Cancun tourism industry.

Why Is Mexico So Popular?

Cancun is home to some of the most luxurious and beautiful hotels in the world. The destination serves as a staple for spring breakers, family vacationers, and couples looking for a romantic getaway. Mexico’s, and more specifically Cancun’s, proximity to the United States makes it an easy destination for people in the US and Canada to get to.

Flights to Mexico are generally cheaper and faster than flights to other popular tourist destinations in Europe or Asia. Plus, Mexico shares time zones with the US, making it the perfect place for digital nomads and remote workers to set up a base and work from.

Mexico currently has some no covid restrictions for entry. Entering the country is a breeze, with no pre-departure covid test required. In fact, it’s one of a growing list of countries in the world without any covid related entry requirements. Once inside, Mexico has relaxed COVID restrictions and Cancun has just dropped the requirements to wear masks outdoors.

Growing So Fast

Mexico became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world during the peak of the COVID pandemic. This super fast growth did come with some growing pains though.The country suffered from overtourism for months and it caused a bit of a problem for some of the countries popular airports. Some travelers reported waiting as long as 2 hours to get through immagration. Though it seems that these problems have subsided.

There was also a spike in crime at some popular tourist destinations. The government has been versatile in dealing with these issues though, most likely not wanting to ruin the economic boom coming from the spike in tourism.

The Future Looks Bright

Many people expected the tourism boom to end when the pandemic fizzled, but that seems to not be the case. A wild spring break and now a likely sold out Easter weekend show that Mexico’s popularity is sustainable and some companies are confident in this.

American hotel giant, Hilton, is planning to expand its network in Mexico this year with 15 new hotels and resorts. In an interview with MILENIO, Juan Corvinos, vice president of development for Latin America and the Caribbean for Hilton stated, “Our prospects for Mexico are very good and the development team will continue working to make it so. We have aggressive growth plans, we will arrive before the end of the year with these 15 hotels, we have many scheduled openings”

Hilton is not alone. Eleven brand new resorts have just opened in Cancun and we can expect many more to be opening in the future.

These 4 Caribbean Nations Ease Entry Requirements

The Caribbean has remained an excellent destination for Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Short flights, gorgeous beaches, and sunny weather make for an incredible vacation.

Still, COVID-19 restrictions have—albeit often strictly—stayed in place.

Many Caribbean nations are now easing entry requirements now. Some countries, such as Aruba and Curaçao have eased all COVID-19 restrictions.

However, these nations have reduced COVID-19 restrictions recently:

1. The Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic—due to its gorgeous weather and beaches—is a super population for American visitors. Americans will be delighted to hear the Caribbean nation has eased COVID-19 restrictions this week.

In a press release on Monday, the Dominican Republic government announced it will allow activities and businesses to resume normal operations. In addition, citizens will no longer need to stand six feet apart as social distancing measures have ended.

Although the nation hasn’t fully removed its mask mandate. The government stated: “The removal of the mask mandate will depend on an increase in vaccination numbers and a further reduction in COVID-19 cases so we are all urged to continue following the protocols.”

Other changes include:
- No restrictions on religious gatherings
- Public transport is back to full capacity
- All bars are back to normal
- Restrictions have ended at sporting events
2. St. Kitts & Nevis

Starting April 1, all international tourists entering St. Kitts & Nevis by air may show proof of a negative RT-PCR test or a negative antigen test to enter the nation. Previously, only RT-PCR tests were available.

However, only fully vaccinated tourists can enter the nation.

St. Kitts & Nevis does have an exemption for those under 18—who can enter the nation without proof of vaccination. Travelers must also complete a passenger locator form and other supporting documentation. Although it’s only a partial easing of restrictions, it’s still good news for tourists.

3. Anguilla

Anguilla has begun easing its travel restrictions; however, the restrictions remain slightly complicated. From April 1, travelers no longer need to apply for permission to enter the nation. However, travelers still need to present proof of vaccination and a negative PCR test.

The test can either be a PCR test three days before travel or an antigen test two days before travel.

Anguilla’s on arrival testing:
- Anyone who has received their booster shot—or received their full vaccination shot in the last six months—doesn’t need to take a test on arrival
- Anyone who has been fully vaccinated yet received their final vaccination dose over 6 months ago, will have to take a test on arrival costing $50.
- Unvaccinated travelers under 18 can only enter with vaccinated adults
4. Bonaire

Bonaire isn’t the most popular of Caribbean destinations—yet it’s full of sheer beauty. The Dutch Caribbean island eased entry requirements for travelers this week.

Fully vaccinated tourists, who had their second vaccine dose taken within the last 270 days, no longer need to take a test to travel to the nation. Unvaccinated travelers, however, must take an antigen test within 24 hours of departure. They can also opt for a PCR test 48 hours before departure.

Travelers must fill out the health declaration form, regardless of their vaccination status.

Puerto Rico Drops Mask Mandate

Puerto Rico has scrapped its mask mandate for all travelers, irrespective of their vaccination status. On March 15, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi (NPP, D) said citizens won’t need to wear masks in most indoor and outdoor places.

The move comes as the U.S. terrority has fully vaccinated an impressive 95% of its population. It becomes one of the most restriction-free destinations for U.S. tourists.

Puerto Rico joins a growing list of places that have ended their mask mandate.

Belize Plans To Lift All Remaining Covid Restrictions

A destination still requiring foreign tourists to present proof of vaccination or a negative test in order to enter, Belize could soon become the next country in the Caribbean to lift all remaining Covid restrictions, as announced by a top government official. And what’s best: a further relaxation of measures is expected as soon as next week.

Though vaccinated travelers have enjoyed hassle-free visits to Belize throughout most of the pandemic, recently even those considered fully immunized have had to observe a series of requirements. Among them, tourists must purchase mandatory health insurance, book accommodation at a Gold Standard property, and wear masks once inside various indoor spaces.

Now, it seems the country is preparing to lift most – if not all – curbs.

Belize’s Cabinet Might Lift Remaining Restrictions As Soon As April

Speaking at the Spanish Lookout Business Expo, Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Eamon Courtenay, suggested that any remaining Covid restrictions still being enforced by Belizean authorities might be lifted ‘next week‘. That means travelers due to arrive in the country this April for their yearly vacations could experience an even-freer Belize.

During his statement, the Minister pinpointed that it is ‘important’ to appreciate that, because of Covid, Belize has suffered ‘the worst economic crisis’ of its recent History. As a nation heavily reliant on tourism, especially that originating from nearby countries such as Mexico and the United States, Belize’s economy took a heavy hit over the last couple of years.

Courtenay highlighted how the pandemic took its toll on average Belizeans, not only due to infections and subsequent deaths, but also job losses. In 2020, the first year of the crisis, the small nation experienced a staggering 16% fall in GDP, with over 65,000 Belizeans losing their jobs, as a result of strict health protocols and tight measures that made travel burdensome for several categories of travelers.

While he notes that ‘personal rights and freedoms had to be seriously curtailed in the public interest’, the Foreign Minister concedes that the cost of Covid was substantial, hinting that the country may soon reopen further. In his own words, those monitoring the level of restrictions in Belize closely should ‘tune in for the announcement from the Cabinet next week’.

According to him, there is a chance ‘freedoms will be restored again‘ following the announcement. At present, the measures that are still in place across Belize involve mandatory mask wearing indoors and in public offices, enforcement of physical distancing in indoor settings, capacity limits for certain venues, and a Covid proof of entry for foreign travelers, including U.S. citizens.

What Exact Measures Could Be Relaxed Next Week In Belize?

While the country has recently started allowing fully vaccinated Americans, as well as other immunized visitors, to enter without a negative PCR test, the unvaccinated are still subject to testing.

When unable to present a vaccination certificate, foreigners must be in possession of a negative PCR result, issued within 72 hours of arrival, or a negative Rapid Antigen result dated no earlier than 48 hours prior to the border crossing.

Home test kits are also not accepted.

When choosing to not undergo testing prior to traveling, unvaccinated visitors are subject to testing at the airport upon arrival for a fee of US$50, or BZ$100, to be paid in cash.

If an active infection is picked up, they will then be required to undertake quarantine at a government-approved hotel at their own expense, only being allowed to leave following verified recovery, such as a second negative test.

For now, we still do not know what travel restrictions will be lifted exactly in April, or whether the Cabinet will focus specifically on the easing of internal mandates, such as mask usage and the scrapping of the Gold Standard program.

Currently, those eligible to visit Belize must book accomodation at a Gold Standard-listed hotel, and are required to present proof of having done so. It is also not possible to affirm, at this stage, whether Belize will follow neighboring Mexico’s lead in scrapping all existing Covid border measures.

Unlike Belize, Mexico grants both the vaccinated and unvaccinated unrestricted entry, having returned to pre-pandemic travel regulations and going as far as removing the increasingly popular Health Declaration Form.

We will find out more about the Cabinet’s reopening plan next week, as revealed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Right now, despite its tougher protocols, Belize is one of the safest countries to visit in the Caribbean, reporting a nearly negligible average of 8 infections per day, or only 1% of its January 23 peak.

Due to these favorable trends, which point towards a further relaxation of rules, travelers can expect more positive news coming from Belize in the next few days.

JetBlue and Qatar Airways Announce Partnership Expansion To Serve 182 Destinations

Frequent travelers from both airlines will soon see more benefits in services, flight services, and points redemptions options

The American low-cost airline JetBlue and the Arab state-owned flag carrier Qatar Airways recently announced in a press release an expansion of their partnership to serve 182 destinations.

The new alliance will connect travelers to JetBlue’s network of 100 destinations in North America and the Caribbean, and Qatar’s international network of 82 counties. Both companies will be sharing codes in additional markets soon.

During the following months, client members of the frequent flier programs of both airlines will soon see benefits in services and rewards, including more connections, marketing opportunities, and flight schedules availability.

Robin Hayes, JetBlue’s chief executive officer, talked about the successful existing partnership and its expansion: “For more than a decade Qatar Airways has been an excellent partner, consistently delivering an elevated customer experience that aligns extremely well with the JetBlue brand and the expectations of our customers.” And added: “Now, as we look to our next decade together, the enhancements and plans for growth announced today will put Qatar Airways on track to be our largest internationally-based partner.”

The carriers will focus on developing a plan for the integration of more airside transfer options connecting to New York’s airport, the John F. Kennedy International Airport.

His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, said: “The enhanced partnership between Qatar Airways and JetBlue is a further encouraging sign for the recovery of the aviation industry.”

He also expressed his contentment and expectations about this expansion: “We have focused on growing our partnerships with leading airlines such as JetBlue by bringing significant benefits to our passengers through an expanded global network. Both airlines have a strong commitment to excellence in customer experience and innovation, ensuring this closer relationship is a very positive step for our joint customers.”

This strengthening of alliances comes right after the recovery of air travel. Both carriers foresee a busy market, more travelers wishing to explore the world and the airlines expect to be prepared to satisfy their customers’ travel needs and requests.

More Benefits For Frequent Travelers

Qatar’s Hamad International Airport in Doha has been named the best airport in the world in 2021 by the aviation rating company Skytrax and is one of the main travel destinations and connections JetBlue travelers currently enjoy as benefits of the partnership.

From Doha, JetBlue travelers can choose from more than 80 destinations in South Asia, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Africa. Qatar frequent flyers can also take advantage of New York connections and travel to more than 60 destinations available in JetBlue’s network —in the United States, Canada, Central America, and the Caribbean, to popular destinations like Aruba, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Guatemala, Miami, Las Vegas, Atlanta—, including the recently added direct flights to Puerto Vallarta and London.

The carriers’ loyalty programs allow travelers to currently enjoy benefits like accruing TrueBlue points or Privilege Club Avios. The companies expect to allow frequent flyers to redeem those accumulated points on either JetBlue or Qatar Airways flights.

US travelers will be able to choose not only their preferred destination but also air travel service. Skytrax also awarded Qatar Airlines the title ‘Airline of the Year’ and has recognized its outstanding service and comfort, highlighting also the carrier’s seats, catering service, and lounges.

JetBlue is also the 6th largest airline in the United States and has been recognized for the comfort of its fleet. The company is known for its coach’s ample legroom, entertainment service, wifi on board, and customer service.

Both companies’ individual developments and services enhancement will also benefit travelers. Qatar Airways has also partnered with tech companies like WiseTech Global, and recently announced a software optimization for their direct ebooking service. JetBlue, on the other hand, has recently expanded services in New York, offering over 5,000 new jobs, as part of the carrier’s pandemic recovery plan.

Victoria, British Columbia

The weather is warming up and beautiful British Columbia is open and ready to be explored. Head over to Vancouver Island and get to know the capital city of Victoria.

The province dropped its mask mandate this month, and proof of vaccination to access a number of services will only be required until April 8th. And as of April 1st, pre-departure Covid tests will no longer be required from all international arrivals to Canada.

The spring and summer months means it’s the perfect time to stroll Victoria’s beautiful waterfront, the Inner Harbour. This is a great starting point for exploring downtown Victoria – go shopping, wander through the boutiques and restaurants and even stop by the iconic Empress Hotel. Galway, Ireland

Copenhagen, Denmark

Denmark was one of the first Scandinavian countries to end its Covid-related entry restrictions. And as of February 1st, the government removed all internal restrictions as well.

Oranjestad, Aruba

Just last week, Aruba became the 16th country to remove all entry requirements for incoming travelers. While travel medical insurance and filling out an embarkation/disembarkation card is still required, other travel restrictions have been scrapped on the island.

According to the VisitAruba website, wearing a mask is no longer mandatory at private businesses like restaurants and shops unless it’s required at the establishment’s discretion.

Aruba’s colorful capital city of Oranjestad is your perfect introduction Aruba. Being a Dutch colony, this is the place to admire all of the impressive colonial architecture – just wander the enchanting little streets and take it all in. Mexico President Proposes New Cruise Port For Playa Del Carmen

The president of Mexico has recently proposed a new cruise port for the coastal resort town of Playa del Carmen – in Mexico.

In a press conference – which took place last week – the country’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced plans to gain back the ownership of 2000 hectares of land – which he hopes will play host to the planned cruise port.

The land was previously handed over to a North American company by one of Mexico’s former presidents – Ernesto Zedillo – who spent 6 years as leader of the nation’s government, from 1994 to 2000.

The land is currently being used for construction purposes, with the U.S. company – which goes by the name of Vulcan Materials – extracting gravel from the site, exporting it back to North America, in order to use it to construct roads inside the country.

However, Mexico’s current leader, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is hoping to be able to come to an agreement with Vulcan Materials, which could potentially lead to the land being returned to Mexican ownership – so that a cruise port can be constructed on it.

Alternatively, it was mentioned that if the land was not to be used to host the planned cruise port, then it could instead be used to play home to an ecotourism complex.

And, this would also go inline with Mexico’s focus on ecotourism – with the nation already having introduced a number of policies and programs which are focused on sustainable tourism.

Port Plans Previously Opposed By The Hotel Owners Of Playa Del Carmen

Although there is no doubt that the construction of a cruise port in Playa del Carmen would raise the profile of the resort town even further, there are a significant number of the town’s businesses that have opposed the idea.

The main people that have objected to the plans are those involved in the local hotel and accommodation industry – with hotel owners from the likes of Playa del Carmen and Cancun believing that it could be detrimental to their businesses.

This is due to cruise ship goers usually only being given a short space of time to explore one place – which would effectively mean huge numbers of tourists only coming to Playa del Carmen for a few hours and then leaving the town to continue their cruise.

Therefore having no need to take advantage of the wide variety of hotels, hostels and other accommodation options currently on offer in Playa del Carmen.

Hotel businesses have also recently displayed their displeasure regarding a lack of regulations when it comes to tourist accommodation in Playa del Carmen – with companies such as AirBnB proving to be extremely popular amongst visitors to the resort town.

A Cruise Port In Playa Del Carmen Would Be Welcomed By Cruise Companies

However, for cruise ship companies there is no doubt that having a port located at Playa del Carmen would be hugely beneficial for them – as it would allow them to take full advantage of huge numbers of tourists flying into Cancun International Airport.

Especially with Cancun International airport being just an hour’s drive from Playa Del Carmen.

Playa Del Carmen Also Making Other Headlines

This is not the first time that Playa Del Carmen has made headlines in the last week or so – with the town having seen large amounts of seaweed arrive on its beaches just last week.

And, it is expected to become even worse in the coming weeks – with experts predicting more and more algae to flood the country’s beaches.

There was also the announcement that Playa del Carmen will soon be home to a brand new all-inclusive – and adults-only – attractive resort, named Secrets Moxché Playa del Carmen, which is due to open its doors next month (April 18).

US State Department Issues New Travel Warning For Tijuana And Baja California

Travelers have been warned to reconsider travel, the government is concerned about crimes and kidnappings in the region

The U.S. Department of State issued a new travel warning for US citizens visiting Tijuana and Baja California. The update comes after recent cases of kidnapping and violence in the region.

The amendment has been made just two weeks after the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the United States announced that it lowered travel advisory for Mexico from “Level 4: Do not travel”, to “Level 3: Reconsider Travel”.

The government is concerned about rising crime and recent kidnappings which include homicide cases and violent aggressions. The official publication states: “Transnational criminal organizations compete in the border area to establish narco-trafficking and human smuggling routes. Violent crime and gang activity are common. Travelers should remain on main highways and avoid remote locations.”

Many Americans have been traveling in the past few weeks to Tijuana also for cheaper gas prices, as Los Angeles Times reported. Those visiting the region, even for a short period of time, should stay aware and follow the State Department’s recommendations.

Risks For Travelers In Tijuana

According to the information shared by the US Department, the highest concern is addressed to non-tourist areas of Tijuana, where a high number of homicides have been reported recently. The government explained that most homicides have been targeted, but bystanders can be injured or even killed in territorial disputes between criminal organizations.

It has also been disclosed that citizens and lawful permanent residents in the United States have been victims of kidnapping.

The president of Tijuana’s Chamber of Commerce, Jorge Macías Jiménez, has made declarations to Fox 5, after the US Government shared this update: “The warning is mostly for areas where tourists wouldn’t go in the first place, it won’t harm tourism or the commercial sector.”

Macías Jimenez considers that the warning shouldn’t frighten tourists and said: “I do advise people to use caution since there are areas where criminal disputes sometimes result in injuries or even death of bystanders, but that’s only if you venture into non-tourist areas.”

Travel Considerations And Recommendations

The US Department of State also shared recommendations and advice and requested US government employees to adhere to the restrictions. These are the current considerations regarding Baja California:
- Avoid Mexicali Valley: the agency urges Americans to avoid this area due to the “heightened possibility of violence between rival cartel factions”.
- Travelers can use Highways 2 and 2D —during daylight hours— to transit between Mexicali, Los Algodones, and San Luis Rios Colorado. Also during the daytime, visitors can use Highways 1, 8, and 5.
- Reconsider Travel to Baja California: the government urges US citizens to especially avoid non-tourist areas.
Travelers must read and understand the information published on the government’s official website when visiting Mexico. General Mexico Travel recommendations include:
- Do not transit between cities during nighttime. Travelers shouldn’t hail taxis on the street, it is better to rely on dispatched vehicles, app-based services and regulated taxi stands.
- Avoid traveling alone, especially in remote areas.
- Do not travel to Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas states due to crime and kidnapping.
- Reconsider travel to Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Mexico, Morelos, Nayarit, Sonora, and Zacatecas states due to crime and kidnapping.
- Increase caution when traveling to Aguas Calientes, Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, Tlaxcal, and Veracruz states and Mexico city due to crime and kidnapping.
- Review the US Embassy’s, CDC, and Crime and Safety Reports’s webpages regarding Mexico.
- Exercise increased caution when visiting local bars, casinos, or nightclubs.
- Keep family and traveling companions informed of the location and travel plans.
- Follow the US Department of State and the US Embassy on Facebook and Twitter.
- Avoid wearing watches or jewelry, since these are considered signs of wealth.

Thailand has just released a timeline for the complete removal of all their Covid-19 related entry restrictions.

The Southeast Asian traveler hot-spot – home to the world’s most visited city in Bangkok – has tried to kick-start its tourism sector several times throughout the pandemic, though the country still has a strict set of entry requirements that travelers have to follow in order to be able to visit.

However, the latest developments in their reopening saga suggest that such requirements could be on their way out in just a few months.

Whilst the prospect of having entry requirements eased is dependent on several factors, it’s still an exciting thought for travelers with thoughts of heading to the Land of Smiles this summer.

Here’s a look at the planned timeline of changes, what it will take to make sure they happen plus a recap of the entry methods available to travelers at present.

Entry Restrictions Easing Timeline – Information For Travelers

Ever since they first decided to tentatively reopen their borders during the pandemic, Thailand has been no stranger to tampering with its strict entry requirements in an effort to try and lure more travelers back to its shores. Its latest of many such changes came just a week ago, when the government removed the requirement for travelers to produce a negative PCR test result prior to their flight, a move that several countries have taken in recent months.

However, the country isn’t going to stop there. According to Thailand’s Sports and Tourism Ministry, more changes to the country’s entry requirements are in the pipeline – though they are contingent on the country keeping case levels low throughout next month’s Songkran festival. If cases are high – as the country’s Department of Disease Control predicts they will be – Thailand’s restrictions are set to be in place for even longer.

The festival – which celebrates Thailand’s New Year – is the largest holiday in the country, and is known around the world for its water splashing festivities. It is also a time when Thais travel back to their home provinces to celebrate with their families – potentially spreading the virus far and wide. Authorities have curbed water-related celebrations during the holiday for the last two years, whilst they have asked people to perform a Covid-19 test before taking part in celebrations this year.

If case levels around the country remain low following the holiday, the timeline for restriction changes will be as follows:
- May 1 – replacing the RT-PCR test on arrival with an antigen test kit (ATK) check conducted by a medical professional – a faster and cheaper method of testing
- June 1 – the cancellation of the Test and Go scheme and Thailand Pass, allowing travelers to be able to entry the country as per normal
Speaking about the timeline, Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn appeared to be worried about the fact that several of Thailand’s neighbors have recently dropped their entry restrictions.

“Thailand started like a rabbit, running quickly last year as we reopened to visitors. We cannot let the country fall behind as many nations are opening borders and have fewer restrictions than us,” the minister said.

In order to enter Thailand at present, travelers need to apply for a Thailand Pass, a QR code that proves travelers have all the necessary requirements – such as Covid-19 vaccinations, health insurance, and a stay at a designated hotel – needed to enter the country.
