Famous for its vibrant culture, year-round warm weather, and friendly locals, Manila, the cultural and financial center of the archipelagic state of the Philippines, has been drawing in a record number of remote workers since the country itself reopened for foreigners.

With such strong offers in the subregion, however, you may be wondering what it is about the once-overlooked Filipino capital that has got nomads so enthralled in the first place:

Manila Is The 7th Fastest-Growing Digital Nomad Hub Worldwide

When talking Southeast Asian (SEA) capitals, Manila is somehow always forgotten as the Phillippines have historically paled in comparison to the far more popular Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, in terms of expat numbers.

It is one of the least foreign-populated capitals in SEA, and somehow it always fails to get mentioned in travel guides detailing the continent’s most exciting city breaks for digital nomads.

That’s not to say the blatant ignoring and underestimation of Manila is a result of lacking infrastructure or a diverse tourist offer to rival the Thai capital, or Malaysia’s cosmopolitan seaside cities. Quite the contrary.

It may receive little to no promotion in the West, contrary to its immediate neighbors, but it is one of the most fascinating and best-equipped cities country-hoppers could pick as their medium to long-term home, and the proof is in the numbers, as Manila keeps growing as a nomad hub.

According to NomadList, a digital nomad database relying on contributions form over 10,000 members, Manila is the 7th-fastest growing nomad destination of 2023. It surpasses community faves Ljubljana, in Slovenia, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, in Vietnam, which settle for numbers 10, 9, and 8, respectively.

This does not mean Manila is one of the top destinations for nomads globally just yet, but the fact it’s trending, and securing a top 10 spot in the fastest-rising list is an indication of where it’s headed in the near future.

Why Is Manila Suddenly So Popular With Nomads?

Overall, 75% of NomadList respondents have had a positive impression of Manila when working remotely from there, with a majority attributing it an ‘Okay’ Quality of Life score, a ‘Good’ Community Score, and listing affordability as a positive factor.

Overall, nomads in Manila have reported being able to live comfortably on earnings of only $1,543 per month, making it one of the cheapest major cities not only in Southeast Asia but the whole world, especially when expenses elsewhere range between $2,000 and $3,000.

It is also relatively affordable to rent an Airbnb for the long term in Manila, with the average overnight rate ranging from $38 to $57 for a fully-equipped apartment in a central location, while other sources place it at between $293 and $361 for one week.

The cost of food reflects the lower-than-average prices as well, with a meal at an ordinary restaurant costing as little as $4.48, based on Numbeo estimates, while a three-course dinner for two in a mid-range restaurant has a median price of $29.58.

As a digital nomad haven, it is characterized by a plethora of coworking spots and work-friendly cafes, fast and reliable internet across the urban zone, relatively efficient public transportation, and a warmer climate, making it particularly attractive for long-term visitors hailing from the Northern Hemisphere.

In terms of connectivity, Manila is the main transit hub in the Philippines, offering residents nonstop flights and ferry service to many of the country’s paradisaical islands, including Palawan, the up-and-coming sunny hotspot, and other international destinations.

Downsides Of Living In Manila

Today, over 13 million people call Manila’s metropolitan area home, the largest conurbation in the small island of Luzon, making it a rather crowded metropolis.

As a city, Manila has accumulated centuries upon centuries of History, from its early days as a fortified Tagalog port, through the eras of Spanish colonization and direct American rule, and finally as the highly-urbanized capital of the Filipino state.

In the modern era, however, it’s developed into a megacity with a high population density, and it may not be the ideal destination for nomads hoping to slow it down in a more peaceful environment.

Some of the main downsides of living in Manila are the urban pollution, the chaotic traffic, and the overpowering humidity.

Still, walkability is ‘Great’, as assessed by NomadList, and safety, as well as food safety, a primary concern for nomads relocating to Southeast Asia, are both at ‘Good’ levels.

The holidays are just around the corner, leading to some of the busiest travel weeks of the year. Flight delays are extremely common at this time of year, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Flying can already be a stressful experience, but delays can make it even more of a hassle.

Some of the best ways to avoid flight delays are to book with an airline with a high rate of on-time flights and to book a flight early in the morning — statistically speaking, it’s much less likely to be delayed than one later in the day.

According to new data from UpgradedPoints, these are the U.S. airlines that are most likely to experience flight delays right now.

1. Frontier Airlines

The worst airline for flight delays right now is Frontier Airlines. Flights with this budget carrier have a 31.9% chance of being delayed.

Rather than roll the dice and risk an almost 1-in-3 chance of having your flight delayed, it’s better to choose a more reliable airline for flights this winter.

Frontier is also currently facing other issues, including a class-action lawsuit over the airline’s $599 “unlimited flight” pass that was launched earlier this year.

2. Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines had a massive meltdown last year right around Christmas, leading to thousands of flight delays and cancellations.

Many travelers questioned whether booking with Southwest was safe in light of the total operations failure. And while it’s likely that Southwest will be working extra hard to avoid a repeat incident this winter, you may not want to take your chances.

And according to historical data, Southwest flights still have a 31.8% chance of being delayed, making the airline almost as unreliable as Frontier.

3. JetBlue

Another less-than-reliable airline with a high chance of delayed flights is JetBlue. This New York-based carrier does not have the best track record when it comes to on-time flights.

Although it’s not quite as bad as Frontier or Southwest, flying on JetBlue means that you still have a whopping 30.8% chance of flight delays when you travel.

4. Allegiant Air

Next up on the list of airlines likely to have delays is Allegiant Air. This budget airline is not particularly reliable, so even though you may save money booking your flight, you might also have to contend with unexpected delays.

Allegiant Air flights have a 29.2% chance of being delayed.

5. Spirit Airlines

Finally, we have Spirit Airlines. Although this budget carrier is the butt of many jokes for being a less-than-ideal way to travel, it’s actually not as bad as some other U.S. airlines when it comes to delays.

When flying with Spirit, you have a 28.1% chance of experiencing a flight delay.

Which Airlines Have The Least Delays?

So now that you know which airlines are most likely to experience flight delays right now (and which airlines to avoid!), here are the airlines with the least delays.

Although you might be tempted by ultra-low fares with an airline like Frontier or Spirit, it can be worth the extra money to book with a more reliable airline.

Here are the top three airlines with the least delays right now:
- Alaska Airlines: 20.3% chance of delay
- Delta Air Lines: 19.1% chance of delay
- Hawaiian Airlines: 15.6% chance of delay

While most of the accessories were admittedly better-suited for women, I still had to see what was available 😂. They also plan to add more accessories for men in the future.

Fort Lauderdale is packed FULL of things to do, and that’s if you even feel the need to leave the W!

The W Fort Lauderdale has the perfect place to soak up the sun in style on its rooftop WET deck, complete with an amazing pool, cabanas, and staff walking around constantly to make sure your drink is always full.

Another cool thing about staying at the W Fort Lauderdale is the events they have at night. We were able to take part in cocktails with a live artist and music, and a really fun game night.

And don’t worry, if all you want to do is rest and relax, the AWAY spa is just an elevator ride away from your room. I’m still dreaming about the AMAZING massage I got while staying there.

Looking to get out of the hotel for a while? Fort Lauderdale won’t disappoint. Go for a bike ride along the beach, go rug-making, try a ton of different foods at Sistrunk Marketplace, or simply walk across the street to the gorgeous beach in front of the W.

If you’re looking for an amazing dinner spot, look no further than Rocco’s Tacos, and don’t leave without trying the freshly made guacamole! This was my favorite dinner of the trip and definitely a place I’ll be visiting again.

Will it be Mexico? Somewhere in Europe? If only there was some way we could know the destinations that are growing in popularity.

It turns out there is a way – there’s data out there that shows which destinations are gathering the most interest from travelers as we head into 2024.

A new report from luggage storage app Bounce has tracked the Pinterest travel index for a host of popular destinations to determine a list of the 20 places with the biggest increases in interest over the last year.

There are some intriguing and enticing places on the list, and we have picked out six of our favorites that we think everyone should consider checking out.

Kyoto, Japan

A country that has recently been breaking its own records for tourism, Japan can certainly be considered one of the most trending places to visit.

Kyoto is one of the country’s oldest and most famous cities and was the capital of Japan up until the mid-1800s.

The city itself is packed with stunningly beautiful pagodas and temples, as well as old, cobbled streets where geishas can be spotted.

It’s also the launchpad to two of Japan’s most iconic attractions: the Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for its hundreds of red wooden gates, and the Arashiyama bamboo forest.

Hawaii, United States

The tropical islands of Hawaii have long been the perfect winter getaway for Americans.

Despite the recent devastating fire on the island of Maui, Hawaii is still trending strongly, with tourists seeking to sample its unique culture and delightful weather.

Next year will be a great time to visit Hawaii thanks to annual festivals such as the Prince Lot Hula Competition in July, the King Kamehameha Celebration in June, and the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival in October.

Ubud, Indonesia

About an hour’s drive from Bali’s international airport, Ubud is an enchanting and relaxing place to retreat on the island away from the beach parties.

Ubud is surrounded by the verdant greens of jungles and rice paddies, making it incredibly photogenic and the ideal place to stop and take a breather.

There are plenty of significant attractions nearby, such as the Pura Tirta Empul temple complex, the Campuhan Ridge, and a monkey forest.

Beautiful beaches, iconic landmarks, and a party atmosphere like no other – Rio de Janeiro is an experience for the senses.

The Brazilian city is known for its many festivals and carnivals, as well as a thriving cultural scene with many theatres and museums.

Perhaps the most iconic sight is the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop of Mount Corcovado, which is surrounded by one of the biggest urban forests in the world, the Tijuca Forest.

Rio is an experience like no other, but be sure you practice sensible precautions as petty crime is not uncommon.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

One of Europe’s most important cities, Amsterdam packs a lot of culture into a small area.

The coffee shops and beautiful museums lining its quaint canals are so popular that Amsterdam has had some trouble with too many tourists in the past year, so visiting at an off-peak time is advisable.

Many beachgoers claim Clearwater as ‘America’s best beach’ and is only about 20 miles from downtown Tampa.

Although, Siesta Keys, roughly an hour away from Tampa, has something to say about that. Clearwater is very popular amongst locals with its postcard-worthy white sand, calm crystal blue waters and overall relaxing vibes.

Others may prefer to stay closer to the city. There is Ben T. Davis beach just a short drive from the airport to get your vacay started right away.

Lastly, there is Honeymoon Island Beach which looks as exotic and pristine as it sounds. Set on an unspoiled strip of beaches stretching 4 miles, this is the place for pure serenity to enjoy a relaxing beach day and finish it off with a beautiful sunset.

More Affordable In Winter

Winter tends to see lower prices in Tampa for tourists, especially at hotels. Whether you choose to stay at a new boujee resort, Airbnb or many of the city’s recognizable chains, prices tend to be on the lower end.

December is the best winter month to save. January and February tend to see slightly higher rates, but should still be more affordable than the busy summer season.

Between now to January offers travelers the best bang for their buck across the board, including flights.

These Are The Top 3 Beach Destinations In Mexico For Digital Nomads This Winter

Mexico is the number one destination for digital nomads in Latin America, particularly those coming from the United States.

Not only is it geographically close to their homeland, Mexico offers Americans warmer weather, that slow-paced living they wouldn’t find had they stayed in their birth cities, and a higher quality of life, making it ideal for a temporary wintertime relocation.

Still, where exactly are remote workers moving south of the border to beat those intrusive winter blues? We have 3 major picks:

Puerto Escondido

Straddling Mexico’s gorgeous Pacific Coast, Puerto Escondido is a lesser-known gem in the state of Oaxaca that’s achieved notoriety due to its fast-growing tourism sector, up-and-coming resort zone, and miles on miles of unruffled, spotless sandy beaches.

Though it was founded only in the 1930s, it rapidly grew in relevance as the downscale response to a high-end Huatulco, hosting young surfers and backpackers, as well as Mexican families going on low-cost vacations – and in recent months, also digital nomads.

Affordability is one of the main drives behind the surge in remote workers in this sleepy, once-forgotten beach town, as average monthly expenses total only $2,231, and nomads get to enjoy the same beautiful nature and coastline as they would elsewhere in the Mexican Pacific for far cheaper rates.

According to NomadList, the largest database for digital nomad trends, Puerto Escondido is the category’s third most-loved beach hotspot South of the border.

Members describe it as ‘great fun’, listing the nightlife, the friendliness to foreigners, the high concentration of ‘places to work from’, and the lively social scene as big attractions for potential medium to long-term residents.

Tulum

According to NomadList, the incredibly popular Tulum, a resort town in the heart of the Mayan Riviera, is the second most popular coastal destination for digital nomads in Mexico right now, highly sought-after for its pristine beaches and nomad-friendly infrastructure.

An extremely rare feat, 100% of the digital nomad platform’s respondents approve of Tulum, deeming Quality of Life and Safety there ‘okay‘, highlighting the weather conditions as a positive aspect (a pleasant 84.2 degrees on average), and praising the internet speed (19 Mbps).

In sum, Tulum is perfect for ‘beginners’ as the local hospitality industry is almost exclusively catered to foreigners, making it extremely easy for them to integrate and access services hassle-free, as they normally would at home.

From numerous coworking spots to digital nomad cafes to fast public WiFi on beaches, it’s no wonder Tulum is such a strong contender for the favorite.

The only downside? Renting long-term and consumer prices can be quite expensive, and nomads are advised to budget at least $3,393 per month.

Playa Del Carmen

The unofficial expat capital of Mexico, Playa Del Carmen is listed as the leading beach destination in the country by NomadList, as well as the fourth most popular overall, barred from the top three by the mighty Mexico City, its cultural competitor Guadalajara, and off-path Oaxaca City.

Carmen is liked by over 90% of NomadList members, a lower percentage than Tulum’s universal acclaim, but it does fare better in more subcategories, such as affordability – nomads can live here on $2,640 per month – average internet speed (47 Mbps), and walkability (Great).

Safety perception is yet another determining factor in Carmen’s success, as the beach town is heavily policed day and night by local security enforcers, whose sole aim is to keep visitors safe – in fact, time and again, it’s featured among Mexico’s safest coastal destinations.

Additionally, the fact that American nomads are eligible for a six-month stay in Mexico visa-free makes Carmen incredibly popular, more so than its Caribbean counterparts, especially now that Cancun International Airport allows U.S. passport holders to simply scan their way into the country.
