More and more digital nomads, particularly Americans, are making their way to Mazatlan, a beautiful coastal city in the state of Sinaloa.

Yes, that Sinaloa. This trigger word hasn’t deterred remote workers from coming here, and they are absolutely loving it.

In fact, locals reading this may be squirming knowing their beloved lesser-known treasure is being revealed to the public.

What Makes Mazatlan Special

Mexico has been such a booming destination that it’s harder to find hidden gems anymore. Oaxaca has been a trendy spot for its cultural experiences and history, but that’s just it – it’s trendy and known now.

There are few places left with true authenticity that tourists can experience. Mazatlan may not be a household name like Cabo, so this is the perfect time to take advantage of real Mexico.

Digital nomads are definitely onto something here, but locals in the know feel time may be ticking. Like any awesome travel discovery, it can become inundated with tourists, changing the entire experience of what once was to now what is.

However, many want new experiences and a cheaper cost of living. Mazatlan holds its own in terms of scenic beaches, and some say it’s like you’re on vacation at all times here.

Places like this are oftentimes expensive, but Mazatlan is one of the most affordable destinations in Mexico for long-term stays.

Plus, the city center is super easy to get around with Uber and their version of a tuk-tuk, which are essentially quirky golf cart taxis, if you will.

There are many awesome photo-worthy sites, such as Lover’s Point and the hike to El Faro, to show off you’re in living the dream in paradise.

Perhaps most important to digital nomads is knowing you’re able to get your work done. Otherwise, your paycheck may come to a screeching halt!

The city is equipped with extremely fast internet, including 5G speeds. In common tourist areas, such as downtown and the Malecon, visitors can expect download speeds upward of 500 Mbps.

The good news is you can complete your work tasks in a timely fashion; the bad news is no more sneaking off to the beach while pretending the wi-fi is spotty.

While most of the accessories were admittedly better-suited for women, I still had to see what was available 😂. They also plan to add more accessories for men in the future.

Endless Things To Do

Fort Lauderdale is packed FULL of things to do, and that’s if you even feel the need to leave the W!

The W Fort Lauderdale has the perfect place to soak up the sun in style on its rooftop WET deck, complete with an amazing pool, cabanas, and staff walking around constantly to make sure your drink is always full.

Another cool thing about staying at the W Fort Lauderdale is the events they have at night. We were able to take part in cocktails with a live artist and music, and a really fun game night.

And don’t worry, if all you want to do is rest and relax, the AWAY spa is just an elevator ride away from your room. I’m still dreaming about the AMAZING massage I got while staying there.

Looking to get out of the hotel for a while? Fort Lauderdale won’t disappoint. Go for a bike ride along the beach, go rug-making, try a ton of different foods at Sistrunk Marketplace, or simply walk across the street to the gorgeous beach in front of the W.

If you’re looking for an amazing dinner spot, look no further than Rocco’s Tacos, and don’t leave without trying the freshly made guacamole! This was my favorite dinner of the trip and definitely a place I’ll be visiting again.

These Are The Top 3 Beach Destinations In Mexico For Digital Nomads This Winter

Mexico is the number one destination for digital nomads in Latin America, particularly those coming from the United States.

Not only is it geographically close to their homeland, Mexico offers Americans warmer weather, that slow-paced living they wouldn’t find had they stayed in their birth cities, and a higher quality of life, making it ideal for a temporary wintertime relocation.

Still, where exactly are remote workers moving south of the border to beat those intrusive winter blues? We have 3 major picks:

Puerto Escondido

Straddling Mexico’s gorgeous Pacific Coast, Puerto Escondido is a lesser-known gem in the state of Oaxaca that’s achieved notoriety due to its fast-growing tourism sector, up-and-coming resort zone, and miles on miles of unruffled, spotless sandy beaches.

Though it was founded only in the 1930s, it rapidly grew in relevance as the downscale response to a high-end Huatulco, hosting young surfers and backpackers, as well as Mexican families going on low-cost vacations – and in recent months, also digital nomads.

Affordability is one of the main drives behind the surge in remote workers in this sleepy, once-forgotten beach town, as average monthly expenses total only $2,231, and nomads get to enjoy the same beautiful nature and coastline as they would elsewhere in the Mexican Pacific for far cheaper rates.

According to NomadList, the largest database for digital nomad trends, Puerto Escondido is the category’s third most-loved beach hotspot South of the border.

Members describe it as ‘great fun’, listing the nightlife, the friendliness to foreigners, the high concentration of ‘places to work from’, and the lively social scene as big attractions for potential medium to long-term residents.

Tulum

According to NomadList, the incredibly popular Tulum, a resort town in the heart of the Mayan Riviera, is the second most popular coastal destination for digital nomads in Mexico right now, highly sought-after for its pristine beaches and nomad-friendly infrastructure.

An extremely rare feat, 100% of the digital nomad platform’s respondents approve of Tulum, deeming Quality of Life and Safety there ‘okay‘, highlighting the weather conditions as a positive aspect (a pleasant 84.2 degrees on average), and praising the internet speed (19 Mbps).

In sum, Tulum is perfect for ‘beginners’ as the local hospitality industry is almost exclusively catered to foreigners, making it extremely easy for them to integrate and access services hassle-free, as they normally would at home.

From numerous coworking spots to digital nomad cafes to fast public WiFi on beaches, it’s no wonder Tulum is such a strong contender for the favorite.

The only downside? Renting long-term and consumer prices can be quite expensive, and nomads are advised to budget at least $3,393 per month.

Playa Del Carmen

The unofficial expat capital of Mexico, Playa Del Carmen is listed as the leading beach destination in the country by NomadList, as well as the fourth most popular overall, barred from the top three by the mighty Mexico City, its cultural competitor Guadalajara, and off-path Oaxaca City.

Carmen is liked by over 90% of NomadList members, a lower percentage than Tulum’s universal acclaim, but it does fare better in more subcategories, such as affordability – nomads can live here on $2,640 per month – average internet speed (47 Mbps), and walkability (Great).

Safety perception is yet another determining factor in Carmen’s success, as the beach town is heavily policed day and night by local security enforcers, whose sole aim is to keep visitors safe – in fact, time and again, it’s featured among Mexico’s safest coastal destinations.

Additionally, the fact that American nomads are eligible for a six-month stay in Mexico visa-free makes Carmen incredibly popular, more so than its Caribbean counterparts, especially now that Cancun International Airport allows U.S. passport holders to simply scan their way into the country.

Cancun is an easy enough vacation.

Why Do Americans Love Cancun?

Prior to the arrival of colonizers and the Hispanicization of Mexico, the Mayans were the ones who controlled the Yucatan, and further down the map of the Americas, the Central American isthmus for more than a millennium through their highly advanced cities and trade routes.

These may be now mostly lying in ruins, and only a shadow of their past glorious self, but important Mayan cities can still be admired all across Yucatan, within short driving distance of Cancun.

5. Tenerife, Spain

Why You Should Book Your Winter Getaway To This Popular Beach Town In Mexico Right Now

The Mexican Caribbean has always been a hugely popular tourist destination for American travelers.

Boasting miles on miles of tropical coastline, a world-renowned hospitality industry, and luxurious resort zones, it is their go-to spot for relaxing and letting go of their mundane worries.

This year, however, this popularity seems to have soared to unprecedented new highs, leaving us wondering whether ‘shoulder season’ is even a concept still applicable to the region. That is particularly true in a trendy beach town that’s witnessing a record increase in bookings.

Playa Del Carmen is already filling up for winter, and travelers are now being advised to book their year-end getaway as soon as possible before they’re left out:

There Are Far Fewer Rooms Available This Winter Already

Following the start of the school year, it’s normally expected for bookings to decrease as families return home from the holidays and resort communities slow down operations in preparation for a much busier winter.

In that sense, 2023 has been rather atypical, as numerous destinations in Quintana Roo, especially those straddling the Mayan Riviera, have been recording a high number of hotel reservations as early as September.

A small beach town a short one-hour drive south of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen is no exception.

According to data gathered by the Cancun Sun, the leading news source on everything Cancun, 40 percent of rooms in Carmen are already filled for the peak season, which comprises December 2023 through February 2024.

September has been traditionally less busy, but now reservations are beginning to build as early as the fall period, with vacationers anticipating the high winter prices and either taking trips during the shoulder months or booking their winter getaway well in advance.

That seems to be the case for a majority, as highlighted by Osner Arjona, President of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa Del Carmen, who was quoted saying the town already has a ‘movement of reservations’ for late 2023 and early 2024.

This trend is expected to intensify further in October, the busiest month for winter bookings, as prices begin to increase and undecided tourists are forced to either make a decision or miss out on their Mexican Caribbean experience altogether.

The fact that bookings already sit at a whopping 40% should be perceived as worrying for those who plan on jetting off to Playa del Carmen this winter, as we are still early on into fall, and vacancy is already down significantly, as low as they would have been normally later in the year.

There is simply no way of telling how much lower occupancy rates will be come October or November.

The Longer You Wait, The Less Attractive Getaway Deals Will Be

While Carmen is unlikely to sell out completely – there are far too many accommodation options to consider, from luxurious resorts to more affordable AirBnB listings – the main concern here is the fluctuation in prices.

The higher the occupation rate, the more expensive accommodation gets, as a result of decreased competition and surging demand, so that is why you are advised to make those reservations right now, not only to secure the best prices, but also a beachfront spot.

Still, you may be wondering why exactly Carmen is suddenly on everyone’s radar.

Why Is Playa Del Carmen So Popular?

Carmen has a high concentration of luxurious resorts, wellness centers, and entertainment venues that place it at the front of the Mexican Caribbean’s tourism offer, up there with Cancun and Tulum.

In fact, one could even argue these three beach zones complement each other, with Cancun serving as the entertainment capital, Tulum the cultural heart and nightlife spot, and Playa Del Carmen the more laid-back alternative.

When going abroad, Americans strongly favor destinations where it’s easy to go and where they can get pampered without worrying excessively about the complexities of planning an international trip. With only 11 days of paid vacation on average per year on average, they want an all-inclusive vacay.

Carmen’s well-equipped resort zone gives them just that, with all of their favorite hospitality brands like the Hyatt, Thompson, Fairmont, and Marriott (just to name a few) having set up residence on the pristine coast.

Other than the ancient Mayan ruins and indigenous culture, the Mexican Caribbean is often associated with the five-star beachfront properties and the thin, white-sand beaches bounded by turquoise-colored seas, all boxes Playa Del Carmen effortlessly ticks off.

As it is much smaller than Cancun, it has a reputation for being more exclusive, though it is not exactly as quaint as the lesser-known Akumal: thousands flock to its bars and beach clubs every weekend for a taste of the (in)famous local nightlife.

It Is Extremely Safe

Another reason why Carmen has been exploding in popularity is the high level of safety, following improvements made by the current administration, responsible for the revitalization of the tourist zone, and deployment of more police to critical sites.

Due to the increased surveillance and zero-tolerance approach towards criminals, it is now one of the safest resort towns in Mexico, following years of being ill-reputed as a dangerous place for tourists.

The Cancun Sun went as far as stating Carmen may be added to the ‘Magic Neighborhoods’ program, a designation awarded by the Mexican Ministry of Tourism in recognition of an area’s cultural, historical, environmental, or economic significance.

The town will also be easier to get to from Cancun this winter, as it will be a stop on the Maya Train route, a new scenic railway linking all of the main tourist hotspots across the Mexican Caribbean, yet another factor that is certain to boost tourism and impact on hotel occupancy.

All things considered, it’s best you book that getaway sooner rather than later.

Even though the peak season for traveling is now behind us, it is now clear Europe will still see an influx of international tourists in the fall, as temperatures are set to remain at record highs, especially along the Southern Mediterranean coast.

Spain is one of such locations where summers seem never-ending and a country that continues to enjoy pleasantly balmy days while most of its counterparts see leaves turn amber and colder winds blow. On top of that, it is home to one of the trendiest beach destinations in the entire continent.

That is why if you’re in need of an off-season sunny getaway, it’s the hugely overlooked Murcia where you should be headed:

The Shortest Possible Introduction To The Wonderful Murcia

Murcia is an autonomous region in Spain’s central Mediterranean coast, sandwiched between the much larger provinces of Andalusia (where the lively city of Malaga is located) and the Valencian Community (home the city of Valencia, one of the world’s fastest-growing digital nomad hotspots).

As it is not as popular a destination as its famous neighbors – Malaga and Valencia themselves concentrate a huge portion of Spain’s coastal tourism, alongside Barcelona – Murcia should not be underestimated:

The region as a whole boasts 160 miles of spotless Mediterranean beaches, part of the aptly-called Costa Cálida, Castillian (or Spanish) for Warm Coast, and it’s easily the sunniest region in Spain, with more than 300 sunny days per year.

Its marvelous weather also puts Northern European countries to shame: as it straddles the Mediterranean, directly facing the North Coast of Africa, Murcia can be a lot warmer than other European beach destinations, with an average temperature of 21°C, or 70°F for the year.

In summer, it easily reaches 93.2°F or above, while in fall, the temperature decreases to a more tolerable 86°F, with lows of 66°F in the evenings. Murcia stays relatively warm well into the winter months, recording an average high of 70°F as late as December and very few, if any, rainy days.

Needless to say, it is perfect for a mid to late-fall beach escapade.

Top 4 Destinations In Murcia, Spain

Some of the best resort towns on the Warm Coast include Los Alcázares, La Manga, and Cartagena (the original one, not its Colombian equivalent).

Los Alcázares

Los Alcázares is easily one of the top spots in Murcia for both appreciating Mediterranean nature and going for dips in the warm sea, and taking in the culture, as it was previously a traditional fishing village before resorts and big international brands started pouring into it.

Somehow, it’s still retained its small-town character, with several fiestas and festivals held throughout the year. If you’re planning on visiting Alcázares this fall, you should mark October 12th as the day to be there, as it coincides with the Día de la Hispanid, a vibrant national holiday in Spain.

Unlike in Malaga, Valencia or Barcelona, local resorts are also a lot more affordable, with overnight rates starting at just $84 at the Ona Mar, a five-star golf & spa resort in Torre-Pacheco, a quieter settlement only 3 or so miles from downtown Alcázares.

La Manga

If a more exclusive beach vacay piques your interest, perhaps it’s La Manga you should hit up. A natural spit – a narrow strip of land – separating a crystal-clear lagoon from the Mediterranean, it is lined with luxury hotels, and either lagoon or oceanfront stays.

It can be considerably pricier than the more underdeveloped Alcázares, with overnights at all-inclusive resorts costing as much as $416, but the privacy and high-end amenities will be greatly appreciated by visitors looking to escape the crowds.

Cartagena

Cartagena, on the other hand, is a much larger coastal hub with over 200,000 residents and equipped with an enormous cultural wealth. One of the oldest cities in Europe, it has been inhabited for over two millennia, and several ancient monuments have survived to this day.

This includes a Roman Amphitheatre dating back to the 1st century AD, historical ramparts and forts, while the newer port area of Cartagena is embellished with a plethora of traditional 18th and 19th-century ornately decorated facades.

Cartagena also offers access to the sea, with long, sandy beaches bounded by turquoise-colored waters being located within short driving distance of the old city, such as Playa de Calblanque and Cala Cortina, but its main appeal is surely the cultural aspect.

Murcia (The Capital)

Also on the coastal zone, the regional capital of Murcia, which the province is named after, concentrates a vast number of historical landmarks.

These include the Cathedral of Saint Mary, a combined Gothic-Reinassance-Baroque effort, Monteagudo Castle, with its iconic Christ statue on top, and the stately University of Murcia.

Europe’s Orchard (as Murcia is affectionately called), is just as popular for its flavorful Mediterranean cuisine, with regional favorites like marinera, a potato and seafood snack, zarangollo, scrambled egg cooked with various fresh vegetables, and tomato-egg-tuna-based Murcian salad.

Why You Should Visit Murcia

According to a recent study headed by Itrem, the Tourism Institute, in partnership with the University of Murcia, beaches, the weather, and gastronomy are three of the main reasons why tourists flock to the region.

As Murcia is not as popular a destination as Costa del Sol, Costa Brava, or even Spain’s Basque Country, it sees less crowding off-season, while Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, and the like suffer from a massive influx of tourists.

If you’re wondering just how difficult Murcia is to reach – after all, the local airport isn’t that big and it hosts mostly seasonal flights from Northern and Eastern Europe – the capital is a short 3h25 train ride from Madrid, when taking the AVE high-speed service.

Getting to Madrid from America is incredibly easy, as nonstop flights are available daily from multiple departure points – just check the closest airport to you or the nearest major transit hub – and tickets from Madrid to the city of Murcia can be as cheap as $27 one-way.

A Growing Community

With more and more digital nomads deciding to come to check out the buzz that Oaxaca has been receiving, the community is growing and becoming more connected. The capital of Oaxaca City is a popular place for digital nomads, but those looking for the beach often settle in Puerto Escondido.

With sand-covered streets, great food, decent internet, and numerous co-working spots to log on from, this beach town is only growing in popularity with remote workers. And the epic surf dense hurt its case either.

Some have called Oaxaca the center of Mexico’s culinary scene, and it’s easy to see why. In a country with amazing food such as Mexico, you know that to take the foodie crown a place must be special, and Oaxaca is just that.

Thanks to a unique climate with an elevation of five thousand feet and a subtropical highland location, things just grow different in this region, and therefore local flavors end up being those that you cannot replicate anywhere else.

The area is home to a mix of eleven major indigenous groups living alongside each other. And here you can see some of the biggest populations of the last remaining various indigenous groups of the region.

While Oaxaca City is a huge draw for digital nomads, the beaches along the Pacific coast are where many remote workers set up shop for a while. While the country of Mexico has no shortage of culture to enjoy and learn about, the state of Oaxaca’s depth of unique cultural traditions offers lessons from a long history. From the colorful buildings lining the streets to the ruins nearby, there is a lot to take in.
