The Maya Train has forever changed the way we approach travel in the Mexican Caribbean, shortening travel distances between all the major resort zones, and making it a lot leasier for foreign tourists to reach lesser-known destinations that could be accessed with a car previously.

As a result, one of these hidden gems, the charming, remarkably-safe city of Campeche, is becoming increasingly more popular for vacationers to visit, with Mexican President himself confirming it is now the third most sought-after destination on the route.

Aerial View Of The Historic Center Of San Francisco de Campeche, Campeche State, Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, Latin America

Since the Maya Train debuted, as many as 7,230 tickets for Campeche were sold, surpassed in sales only by Merida and Cancun.

Tourists Flock Into Campeche For The Fascinating Culture

Campeche is one of the oldest cities not only in Mexico but also on the mainland North American continent.

European settlers established it as early as 1540 in a strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s not a place you want to skip if you’re a culture aficionado.

Picture centuries-old cobbled lanes lined by brightly-painted facades that still retain their Old World charm, plazas flanked by monumental, viceregal Baroque palaces, and well-preserved Spanish convents and churches built to last for eternity.

The Landmark Cathedral In Campeche Lit At Night, Campeche State, Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula

Campeche is easily one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, and a historically charged one at that.

The main building in the Historic Center, Campeche Cathedral, was constructed as early as the 16th century, and it’s one of the most impressive colonial structures in the Yucatán Peninsula.

Other points of interest in town include the Mayan Angel, a landmark statue celebrating Campeche pre-Columbian origins, San José Fort, one of the city’s main defensive mechanisms against pirate incursions, and the surviving city walls.

Yellow Colored Church In Campeche, Mexico

Out of all colonial cities of the New World, Campeche is only of two to still have its protective murallas nearly intact, the other being Quebec City, Canada’s Europenized, French-speaking city. In recognition of its cultural value, UNESCO has added it to its World Heritage Site list.

Beautiful Beaches, High Levels Of Safety And Affordable Stays

Besides the historical attractions, Campeche is within short driving distance of several paradisaical Gulf beaches, such as Playa Caracol, a serene, family-friendly swimming site bounded by mangroves, and the aptly-called Bahamitas, or ‘Little Bahamas’, where sands are virgin-white and waters a bright-blue.

the malecon seafront promenade in campeche mexico

Other than being indisputably beautiful, Campeche has made headlines lately for being one of the safest state capitals in Mexico and the only major city other than Merida to have attained a Level 1 status, as awarded by U.S. authorities.

If you are unfamiliar with travel advisories, Washington classifies different destinations between Levels 1 and 4, with 1 being the safest possible—including risk-free countries like Iceland, Norway, and Finland—and 4 being the most dangerous and that should be avoided at all costs (Russia, North Korea, and the like).

Colorful Street In Campeche, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, Latin America

Despite being a fairly large city, home to over a million residents in its wider metropolitan area, Campeche can feel incredibly quaint, with a high number of pedestrianized streets, which means less of the usual chaotic traffic and very low crime rates.

As is the case with other cities in Mexico, you should definitely not let your guard down, however encouraging advisories sound, but you shouldn’t expect harassment and scamming to be as common, nor pickpocketing or violence, compared to Cancun or Mexico City.

Campeche is also a lot more affordable than your usual Mexican resort town, with centrally-located boutique hotels costing between $112 and $160 to book per night, as listed on Booking.com, and lower food and consumer prices.

How Easy Is It To Get To Campeche On The Maya Train?

Now that you know why Campeche is trending with Maya Train travelers, you are probably wondering how actually easy it is to get there if you’re landing in Cancun, and how much tickets cost.

As seen on the official website, there are two Cancun-Campeche departures planned every day, at 7 am and 9 am, at a total journey length of five-and-a-half hours. The train calls at a number of stations along the way, including ‘Magical Towns’ Valladolid and Izamal and fellow colonial gem Merida.

Tickets can be purchased via the Maya Train online shop or any station and authorized vending point. There are three seating categories: Tourist, Premium, and Local.

Tourist tickets start from around MXN 1,166 during the inaugural phase, or roughly $67.

The Maya Train has forever changed the way tourists approach travel in the Mexican Caribbean since launching last December.

In a way, it’s greatly diversified transportation options in the region, where taxi monopolies operate and local buses cannot always be trusted to be on time.

Prior to the launch, we expected all lines to open simultaneously, but as you should know by now if you’ve visited Mexico since, that did not materialize.

Thanks to construction delays, the train is being inaugurated in steps, and service from Cancun to Palenque is the only one available.

Luckily, some progress is being made, and starting February 29, a second line will be added to the Maya Train, linking Cancun to this mega-popular beach town:

A Beautiful Laid-Back Town In The Caribbean

woman on a beach on Playa del Carmen

Playa Del Carmen is one of the trendiest destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.

Located only an hour south of Cancun, it is traditionally seen as a more laid-back alternative to the bustling resort city that captures nearly half of all foreign arrivals to the country.

While Cancun’s greatest strength is its all-inclusive, family-friendly resorts, Playa’s appeal lies in a youthful, full-of-character beachfront, with its hippy markets and a myriad of casual beach bars and well-frequented discotecas catering to a more diverse audience.

If you’re hoping to meet like-minded travelers or locals and chat over cheap drinks in an internationalized, safe environment, or simply relax on the white sands as you sip on some fresh coconut and admire the tropical view, this is the place to be.

Aerial View Of Playa Del Carmen Bounded By The Caribbean Sea, Mexico, Latin America

Playa’s days as a quaint settlement on the shores of the Caribbean may be long gone since the first luxury resorts and American expats arrived some decades ago, but as it is much smaller than Cancun – 304,942 permanent residents against 888,797 – it can feel less chaotic.

With the exception of Quinta Avenida, the main pedestrian thoroughfare and busiest street in town, lined by restaurants, quirky art galleries, and souvenir shops, the town is relatively quiet, with verdant residential areas and endless miles of coast begging to be discovered.

    playa del carmen, mexico

Some of the top attractions in Playa are Parque Fundadores’ Mayan Portal, possibly the most beautiful gateway to a beach you’ll ever see, the club-packed Calle 10, your nightlife spot after sundown, and Mamitas Beach, where the white sands unfold along a turquoise ocean.

Why Is The Maya Train To Playa Del Carmen Delayed?

Seeing it is one of the trendiest spots in the Mexican Caribbean, it’s no surprise it’s been added to the Maya Train railway map, but like many Playa-bound travelers, we were negatively surprised late last year upon learning the route wasn’t opening as planned in time for the tourist season.

Maya Train Tracks In Mexico, Latin America

Since December, the only service available is westbound, traveling towards Merida, then down to San Francisco de Campeche, two of the most traditional colonial cities in Mexico, before terminating in Palenque, the furthest stop from Cancun.

Strangely enough, the most highly-anticipated route, the one traveling along the southeast coast of Yucatan, calling at the nearby leisure destinations of Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen itself, Tulum, and many more gorgeous beach zones, did not launch this winter.

Maya Train Construction On A Bridge, Mexico

We know as well as you do that waiting for ADO inter-municipal buses that may, or may not depart on time, or booking overpriced private transfers from Cancun International Airport can cause a lot of stress, especially when you’ve flown all the way to sunny Mexico for a relaxing vacation.

The train is set to make multi-destination trips across the Mexican Caribbean easier and safer to plan, as trains typically run on time, and the Maya Train in particular has been touted as one of the safest transportation modes in the world.

Happy Traveler Walking Into A Train, Unspecified Location

Regrettably, the wait has been longer than predicted, and this has led to some confusion among regular tourists who do not follow every single Maya Train development daily, and landed in Cancun only to find out some rail links are still unavailable.

From February 29, the long-delayed line is finally opening, at least partially.

    On The Downside…

From this date onward, the train will depart from Cancun, calling at Puerto Morelos, before coming to a halt in Playa Del Carmen. For those hoping to continue the journey toward Tulum, however, the news isn’t nearly as exciting.

The other service was originally set to be up and running by June 2 at the earliest, coinciding with Mexico’s general elections, but as reported by local news outlets, a judge has ordered ‘stop‘ to an extension from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum.

The new blow to Maya Train enthusiasts comes after a number of environmental groups revealed cenotes and underground waters were being polluted as a result of the driving of pillars along the planned railway, and it’s unlikely construction will resume anytime soon.

woman on a swing in Tulum, Mexico

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) himself conceded ‘section 5 south’, namely the stretch from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum, is ‘one of the most challenging‘ due to the nature of the terrain, and pushbacks on the part of environmentalists.

For now, trains from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen are going ahead, with an inaugural journey set for later this month and complete operationalization this spring.

Last year, the Maya Train marked the triumphant return of the passenger railway in the Yucatan Peninsula after almost a century of defunding and lack of investment. It now connects all of the top tourist attractions around the Yucatán Peninsula, including Cancun, Tulum, and Chichén Itzá.

The success of the Maya Train is ongoing after initial hiccups getting started, with connectivity across the Mexican Caribbean having greatly improved and tourists now using the train to discover off-path parts of the country that were not as accessible before – but it doesn’t end there.

Soon enough, yet another train route visiting hidden gems in two additional states will be launched, including a historical colonial port on the Gulf of Mexico and a laid-back beach town currently trending among surfing enthusiasts:

Mexico’s Next Tourist Train Traveling From The Gulf To The Pacific Coast

As reported by The Cancun Sun, the so-called Isthmus Train is Mexico’s next major development project heading into 2024.

Though it was inaugurated last December, it did not make a splash as all eyes were on the Maya Train, which set out on its inaugural journey from Cancun around the same time.

Despite being ignored at first, the Isthmus Train is now being touted as Mexico’s next major breakthrough in tourism: the service is already up and running, connecting the city of Coatzacoalcos, in the state of Veracruz, to the quaint town of Salina Cruz, in neighboring Oaxaca.

Colorful Port Town Near Coatzacoalcos In Veracruz State, Mexico

Though the current railway map is not nearly as extensive as the much more popular Maya Train, calling at seven stations and linking the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Coast, authorities have promised ‘additional routes’ will be added this year.

By the time of its completion, it is expected that the train will cover over 700 miles. The most exciting thing is, if you’re traveling on the Maya Train from mid-2024, you will be able to connect to the Isthmus line in Palenque.

The Maya Train Will Connect To The Isthmus Line

The UNESCO-protected archaeological zone is the last, southwesternmost station of the Maya Train, located at the far end of the line’s enlongated ‘tail’, and as announced by local media, it will host Isthmus trains as well.

This means it will soon be possible for passengers boarding the Maya Train in Cancun, or any major city on the line, to switch to the Coatzacoalcos-bound Isthmus Train when traveling all the way south to Palenque.

A Bustling Port On The Gulf Of Mexico

Neo Mayan Pyramid In The State Of Veracruz, Mexico

Coatzacoalcos is a strategic port on the Gulf of Mexico, best known for its booming ship industry and indigenous Olmec culture. The cityscape itself is characterized by a unique combination of colonial, modernist, and Mesoamerican revivalist architecture.

Two of the most emblematic symbols of Coatzacoalcos include Pirámide Malecón, an imposing modern pyramidal structure taking direct inspiration from the ruined cities that litter the Yucatán peninsula, and the whitewashed Cathedral of Saint Joseph.

The city also hosts a well-frequented shopping mall (Plaza Forum) with attractive prices and the Olmec Archaeology Museum, where artifacts from this lesser-known pre-Columbian civilization, which co-existed alongside the world-famous Mayans and Aztecs, can be admired.

    A Quaint Pacific Town

On the other hand, Salina Cruz is a much smaller coastal hub best known for its unspoiled golden sand beaches, surfing culture, and year-round warm weather: winters are basically a non-existent concept here, where the lowest-ever temperatures average a pleasant 69.8°F.

Playa Cangrejo, a short half-hour drive from downtown Salina, is the perfect place for unwinding and basking in the sun without being disturbed by surging crowds, what with its quieter, family-friendly environment and varied selection of seafood spots.

Playa Azul is not to be missed either, as it is one of a handful in the region where the sands are virgin-white, and the seas are of an inviting azure color. An even shorter 20-minute drive from town, it is a popular half-day trip for tourists venturing down the Oaxaca coast.

Other non-beach, noteworthy points of interest are the Cortés Lighthouse, a state-protected monument built as early as the 16th century during the first Spanish incursions into Mexican territory, and the Piedra Cuchi viewpoint.

Salina Cruz is a beautiful place to visit in Oaxaca, where you can find a lot of beaches like Punta Azul, Punta Conejo and others.

What We Know So Far About The Isthmus Train

Other confirmed stops on the Isthmus line, departing from Coatzacoalcos, include the towns of Minatitlán, Acayucan, Matías Romero, Unión Hidalgo, Ixtetepec, and Tehuantepec.

So far, we do not know whether the train tracks will be extended to the state capitals of Veracruz and Oaxaca, home to towering Spanish cathedrals and beautiful colonial centers.

As for tickets, prices for the Isthmus Train departing from Palenque have not been announced either, but the route already in operation, linking Coatzacoalcos to Salina Cruz, is quite affordable, starting from $27 for ‘tourist-class’ passengers, and roughly $35 for executive.

If you’re starting your journey in Cancun, you should expect to pay for one-way tickets to Palenque, where you’ll connect to the Isthmus Train, costing between $123 and $197, depending on the chosen fare.

Following the recent spike in gang activity across Mexico, several of Mexico’s tourist destinations have been ramping up security efforts so that tourists remain safe.

After neighboring Cancun launched its own operation against crime, it’s now Tulum’s turn to strengthen its zero-tolerance policy.

This week, Mexico’s status as a low-risk destination was challenged once again by U.S. authorities following the kidnapping of four U.S. nationals in Matamoros, which tragically concluded with two murders and a new diplomatic row between both countries.

Now, popular vacation spots like Tulum are taking preventive measures to avoid further scrutiny and, most importantly, remind visitors that they have nothing to worry about:

Americans Will Be Safe Vacationing In Tulum

Tourists Walking To The Beach In Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mayan Coast Of Mexico

The Matamoros incident, albeit rare in nature, has sparked a furious debate in American society, with new travel warnings issued by some states and Conservative congresspeople going as far as accusing the Mexican Government of being lenient when tackling violence.

The highly-publicized case, as well as the impassioned response from the American side, has led the Mexican President himself to retort that Mexico is ‘safer’ than the United States.

Otherwise, Americans wouldn’t be vacationing or even moving in droves to locations South of the border, as the President argued.

This hasn’t stopped the U.S. from issuing new warnings for at least six regions in Mexico, citing elevated security concerns and crime, and while the state of Quintana Roo is still considered a Level 2 destination, where risks are moderate, authorities are taking no chances in ensuring it stays that way.

It’s pretty common for security to be tightened in Tulum ahead of peak travel seasons, with cameras being installed in tourist zones routinely and panic buttons being added to bus stops.

But this year, the local administration is truly taking it up a notch by launching new major anti-crime operations.

    Zero-Tolerance Policy

Mexican Police Officers Patrolling Playa Del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico

It is worth noting Quintana Roo, in particular, the Riviera Maya, has always been relatively safe for American tourists.

Although crime can occur, it is often centered in suburban areas, where police presence is limited, and gang activity tends to be more prominent.

In reality, however, the state is not more dangerous than other Level 2 spots listed by the U.S. Department of State, such as urban centers in France, Germany, Italy, or other developed nations.

Due to the attention they attract, crime levels are usually higher in any major tourist destination.

    Tulum Ruins, Quintana Roo, Mexico

    Tulum is no exception.

Despite the acceptable rates of urban violence, the new Mayor of Tulum, Diego Castañón Trejo, has made it one of his top priorities to guarantee both citizen and tourist integrity.

He will be helped in his endeavor by Ricardo Morales Santo, Lieutenant of Frigate Marine.

Mr. Santo has been recently sworn in as the new Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum, and having commanded several marine infantry battalions, he is bringing his level of experience to the new posting.

A Group Of Mexican Police Officers

According to the Secretary, there will be more patrolling in the coming days across Tulum, and officers ‘are going to do a good job, and are not going to disappoint the citizens‘.

Besides heightened surveillance, his office is also better equipping all security booths within the town and deploying 70 Marines from a unit in Isla Mujeres to the municipality.

They join 150 municipal officers who are already serving in Tulum, carrying out random checks and keeping a close eye on suspicious activities in beach areas.

Lastly, bars and entertainment venues will be required to close earlier in accordance with new security and noise control laws.

    Tulum Beach

The administration hopes that crime is drastically reduced in Tulum within the initial 100 days of the implementation of such measures.

Trejo added that the operation would help citizens, tourists, and businesspeople ‘feel better’, as well as generate more investment in Tulum as a safe destination.

Tulum Has Never Taken Security Concerns Lightly

Streets Of Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Latin America

There’s no denying Tulum can be overpriced or that development has partly stripped the once-sleepy town of its traditional Mayan character, but detractors simply can’t say it is not well-guarded.

This is not the first time law enforcers have been deployed to cordon off Tulum from the rising rates of crime:

During Spring Break, the National Guard was summoned to discourage criminals from operating locally.

At one point, up to 50 troops were stationed in Tulum, guarding the beaches, the historical ruins, and shopping areas.

Men And Woman Walking In Tulum Beach, Tulum, Mexico

Having established Tulum is safe to visit, we must remind our readers that safety advice still applies, including:

    • Not straying away from tourist zones
    • Not seeking or consuming illicit substances
    • Not exploring peripheral districts where police protection is limited alone

Launch Of New Fee To Visit Europe Delayed Until Next Year

    [ad_1]

    Share The Article

Europe’s plan to launch an Electronic Travel Authorization, which will require Americans to pay a fee every three years in order to travel, has just been pushed back until 2024 as Brussels continues to grapple with operational issues and the complexities of the system’s implementation. The ETIAS, as it’s been dubbed, was initially set to come into force at some point this year.

A Young Woman Wearing A Straw Hat As She Sits On A Wall Atop A Viewpoint With A Panorama Of The City Of Verona, In Northern Italy, Europe

As things stand, Americans are not required to apply for a permit in order to enter Europe. In fact, authorities have made border crossings an incredibly smooth experience for U.S. citizens, allowing them to cross freely via several e-Gate entry points, with no other requirement other than carrying a valid biometric passport.

Once ETIAS come into force, however, they will need more than simply providing ID:

What Is A Travel Authorization System?

Young Woman Looking Concerned Or Distressed As She Uses Her Computer

Europe is preparing for a major overhaul of its existing border rules, and Americans will be among those affected. Soon enough, tourists who are currently exempt from applying for a short-term visa traveling to Europe will be expected to obtain a travel permit in advance or an Electronic Travel Authorization – but what exactly does that mean?

ETAs, in their short form, have become widely popular since the United States introduced its ESTA in 2008 as part of an array of measures aimed at increasing national security. Other countries like Australia and New Zealand have also implemented their own, with Australia being a pioneer in launching the Electronic Travel Authority as early as 1996.

Even though it’s not a visa, and it’s normally issued online in a matter of minutes, ETAs have been a stone in the shoe of travelers who are growing wary of border formalities, especially in a post-pandemic context. After all, unless they hold a valid permit for an ETA-requiring country, they risk being barred from boarding or even refused entry into that territory.

Interestingly, Europe – more specifically, the European Union (EU) – never introduced an ETA, despite talks that it would be enforced circulating in the media for years. Confirming the rumors, the European Commission finally set an introductory date for the permit in 2020 – and then, of course, the pandemic hit. Ever since, several postponements have taken place.

La Giralda In Seville, In The Autonomous Province Of Andalucia, Southern Spain, Europe

When Will Europe Launch Its ETIAS?

The most recent date, announced in August 2022, had been set for the May-November 2023 period, but the launch will no longer be going ahead as planned. Apparently, the EU Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs silently kicked the can down road further by removing any mentions of a November 2023 launch from the official website.

Now, it simply reads 2024, though more details were not given, such as an exact month or reason behind the latest postponement. While this is merely guesswork at this point, we suspect it may be due to the ongoing challenges of enforcing a complex, cross-national border strategy when there are 26 countries involved.

Canal Neighborhood Of Petite France, In Strasbourg, France, Europe

Based on the information provided, the ETIAs will apply to visa-exempt travelers seeking entry into the Schengen Area, a customs union and border-free zone within Europe that comprises not only a majority of EU member states but also the nations of Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Other than improving security, the main goal is to track every tourists’ move into and out of Schengen.

Americans can visit Europe hassle-free, but they must observe one simple rule: never staying longer than 90 days out of any 180-day period. This means that, when using up an entire three months inside Schengen, including any time spent in any of the participating countries, they must immediately leave the territory of all member states and wait three additional months to be readmitted.

Travelers Undergoing Border Control In An Airport In France, Europe

Over the years, the enforcement of this rule has led to some confusion, especially when newcomers are unsure whether their date of entry counts as day 1, or if the date of exit counts towards the 90-day limit, and ended up overstaying, amid other uncertainties. Luckily, the Commission developed a calculator that helps Americans verify the legality of their stay.

    How Expensive Is The Fee?

A Person Taking Out Euro Notes From A Wallet, Europe Travel Concept

ETIAS applicants must pay a €7 fee through the official ETIAS website or app. The EU has reminded tourists the system is not yet operational and that any third parties offering travel permits are scammers. For now, and until 2024 at the latest, Americans are not subject to EES or ETIAS rules, being allowed to enter Europe requirement-free.

Besides the Travel Authorization, Europe is also introducing a new Entry-Exit System (or EES), already being trialed in a number of external borders ahead of a wider rollout. This means that, from late 2023/early 2024, all foreigners entering the bloc will be expected to register fingerprints for stricter border checks on top of presenting their ETIAS at the check-in desk.

For a complete list of all the countries Americans must pay to enter in 2023, please read our accompanying article.

Saudi Arabia has taken on a huge project that should have travelers excited for many years to come. A new ‘smart city’ projected to be 33 times bigger than New York City is being constructed on barren land in the Arabian desert. With high hopes of challenging the status quo, the city, backed by a $500 billion investment, has bold dreams to change Saudi Arabia’s image of being stuck in its ways to building a future of global tourism, sustainability, and innovation.

JetBlue And American Airlines Launch New Nonstop Flights From New York

Flight times are getting shorter for travelers going to and from New York and Boston with 11 new direct routes from New York’s La Guardia Airport (LGA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in 2023. JetBlue and American Airlines have added new direct routes through its Northeast Alliance, which was created in 2020 to increase competition in certain regions where airlines have dominance.

The addition of these routes will bring JetBlue’s lower fare options to the region, as major airlines such as Delta and United have dominated the New York City market. The new direct routes include eight domestic routes to locations such as Atlanta, Georgia; Birmingham, Alabama; Buffalo, New York, Columbia, North Carolina; Greenville, North Carolina; Hyannis, Massachusetts; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Knoxville, Tennessee. Three new international routes have been added for Nassau, Vancouver, and Bermuda.

The alliance provides an incentive for JetBlue and American Airlines to coordinate collaborative flight scheduling between Boston and LaGuardia since JetBlue is the sole operator between the two, providing travelers with more convenient connection times.

The controversial alliance which has received criticism for decreasing competition has created 50 new routes out of John F Kennedy, La Guardia Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, and Newark, with 17 new international routes, while increasing frequencies and capacities on others already running.

“Giving customers more choices for travel is a critical part of the Northeast Alliance,” said Anmol Bhargava, American’s Vice President of Global Alliances and Partnerships in a press release. “We are pleased that with our partner, JetBlue, we will now serve 45 of the top 50 domestic markets from LGA.”

The new JetBlue routes will be going on sale in January, while American Airlines will be offering its flights for sale now.

Maya Train Set To Connect The Yucatan Peninsula Like Never Before

An exciting new railway system is set to be unveiled in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in 2023 after the government removed roadblocks surrounding its development. The controversial project will connect the popular hub of Cancun with countless towns, cities, and sites around the region like never before.

    merida central square

Cancun, along with the likes of Playa del Carmen and Tulum, is an incredibly popular destination for sun-seeking vacationers but suffers from a lack of connectivity with the wealth of cultural attractions in its surrounding area. The vast majority of visitors to the region have their sights set on an all-inclusive resort in the hotel zone and rarely venture out unless on an organized tour.

The new railway project, The Maya Train, is set to change all that. The sprawling 948-mile line will connect Cancun with the entire peninsula with ease, offering tourists and residents alike the chance to explore the region with independence, transforming the landscape for the industry. The line will pass through the states of Quintana Roo, Yucutan, Chiapas, Campeche, and Tabasco.

    mayan train route

If estimates are correct, tourists will now be connected with as many as 190 individual cultural sites, archeological zones, or tourist attractions. 46 Mayan sites will be accessible, as well as 14 of Mexico’s “Magical Towns,” which are villages or towns noted for their cultural significance or beauty.

The final product will be a large loop with two offshoots to reach destinations slightly further out and will feature twenty individual train stations at strategic points around the peninsula.

Tourists can expect the typical big names to all have their own station. Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos, all the major beach destinations, will be connected along their short strip of the Mexican Caribbean coast, opening the opportunity for resort loyalists to try a quick trip to another town with ease.

More exciting is the new kind of travel experience it will provide regular visitors and new ones alike. Cancun is generally avoided by cultural tourists due to the lack of historic sites in the immediate vicinity and the emphasis on luxury and resort life. When the system is completed, travelers will now be able to visit the likes of Merida, recently named one of the best cities in the world to visit.

    chichen itza

Merida highlights a drastically different experience from the beachside resorts, offering a chance to try more local food, understand the colonial history of the area, and move at a different pace than the hotel zones.

There’s also a stop for the world-famous Mayan ruin, Chichen Itza, one of the wonders of the world. Previously, if visitors to Cancun or Tulum had intended to visit the site, the easiest way would have been to book an organized tour or rent a car. The train simplifies the accessibility issues of visiting, adding to the value of a stay anywhere in the peninsula.

    rainforest with mayan ruins

Other interesting stops on the line include often neglected Quintana Roo capital Chetumal and several other lesser-known inland towns.

The project hasn’t been without its controversies, however, and dissenters have successfully stalled its construction several times. Environmentalists and historians have scorned the seemingly rushed development of the Maya Train. Many claim the construction in some areas is bulldozing through valuable undiscovered Mayan archeology zones, destroying pieces of Mexico’s cultural heritage.

    cenote in mexico

Those protecting the environment are concerned about underground caverns and cenotes that will be destroyed in the process. Many of these caves were also sacred places for the Mayan civilization and could also be valuable archeology sites. Others have highlighted the destruction of rainforest areas in the region.

Mexico’s government is often accused for cutting corners for financial benefit, and it appears to have wrangled its way around any further roadblocks by declaring the project a “National Security Project,” which grants it priority over some of the cultural discrepancies that have been brought to light.

    tuylum water huts

If all goes to plan, the train linee should be functional by the end of 2023, although it is likely it may be extended into 2024 along with Tulum’s new airport.

A full list of the intended Maya Train Stations are listed below:

    • Palenque

Mexico Government Confirms Mayan Train Will Launch From Cancun In 2023

The Mexican Government has confirmed this week its ambitious Mayan Train project will be going ahead as planned, with a final launch date set for 2023. Despite some major setbacks recently, including the temporary suspension of construction in key sections, Cancun will soon be connected by rail to numerous other hotspots in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Young Female Traveler Looking Happy During A Train Journey As She Listens To Music And Looks Out The Window, Train Travel Concept

Marred by controversy since it was first presented, the scenic train risked never leaving the drawing board. From triggering the ire of hoteliers, who strongly opposed the installation of train tracks close to their beach front, to being delayed a number of times following strict environmental reviews, it seemed unlikely it would open anytime soon… Until now.

Starting next year, tourists will be able to travel the Riviera Maya extensively, including inland sites that were once largely inaccessible:

A Quick Recap: What Is The Mayan Train?

Train Tracks On Bridge, Train Travel Concept

The Mayan Train, or Tren Maya in Spanish, is a 948 mile long intercity train that has been in the works for a number of years. It is Mexico’s boldest attempt yet to ease travel across its sparsely populated Yucatan Peninsula, which comprises three of Mexico’s most popular states: the eponymous Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche.

While highways in Mexico offer access to a number of cities and destinations off the beaten path, the country has never invested heavily in railway infrastructure, like its North American counterparts, until recently. Although its main goal is boosting tourism in less-visited areas, the Tren Maya will also massively improve connectivity for locals.

Beginning in Palenque, in the non-Yucatan state of Chiapas, it will travel northeast-bound towards Cancun, encircling the whole historical peninsula. On its East Coast route, the train will call at Chetumal, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos, offering easy access to all the main tourist destinations in Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

On the Peninsula’s North and West Coast, visitors will be able to travel by rail to Nuevo Xcan, Valladolid, the famous pre-Columbian city of Chichen Itza, Izamal, the historical Merida, home to Mexico’s oldest cathedral, and San Francisco de Campeche. In the Southern line, destinations include Boca del Cerro, El Triunfo, Escarcega, Xpujil and Bacalar.

What Has The President Actually Said?

Male Traveler In Summer Clothes Making His Way To A Train, Train Travel Concept

Regardless of the battle being fought in court against environmentalists, who are urging the Government not to move forward with the so-called fifth section of the train, citing irreversible damage to archaeological sites, Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Orador has at last confirmed the Mayan Train will leave its Cancun terminal ‘by 2023’.

During a press conference, Obrador reaffirmed that launching the train is ‘an affair of the State’, and ensured it be fully operational next year, though he didn’t specify a date. Besides reiterating his full commitment to the project, the President hit back at protesters, effectively accusing them of pursuing their own agenda and calling them ‘corrupt’.

What Is The Status Of The Mayan Train?

Chepe Train, Copper Canyons, Chihuahua, Los Mochis, Mexico

Even though Obrador’s statements are reassuring, and he seems adamant the remaining tracks will be laid in time for a launch next year, a settlement to the ongoing legal dispute is yet to be reached. Earlier this year, a Yucatan judge ruled that no more tracks should be laid on the fifth section until further environmental evaluations are carried out.

This stretch is perhaps one of the most important on the rail map, as it connects Tulum, famous for its Mayan ruins, to the paradise beaches of Playa del Carmen, running for roughly 37 miles. Additionally, until the section is completed, Cancun is virtually cut off from the Southern Riviera Maya, as all trains bound for Chetumal will call at Tulum.

Tulum Ruins Archaeological Complex, Tulum, Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, Mexico

One of the authorities behind the venture, Fonatur, Mexico’s National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism, released a new report asserting that progress has in fact been made in laying tracks. Namely, 4 of the 7 sections have had advancements, but due to pending environmental and archaeological reviews, the Tulum-Playa del Carmen stretch is not among them.

On July 3, during his tour of the construction sites, Obrador visited the Merida-Cancun route, or section number four, starting in Izamal and terminating at Cancun International Airport. This route runs for 159 miles and, as claimed by Obrador, is 50% complete. Interestingly, this is the first time the President has ever offered an update as precise as this.

Train Ridership Is Increasing As Air Travel Turns Chaotic

A High-Speed Brightline Train Arriving Into Station

As air travel descends into chaos, following reports of staffing constraints at airports, more and more travelers are turning to alternative transportation as a means to avoid being affected by the increasingly common flight delays. Train travel is one such alternative, with ridership in parts of America now up 25% compared to last year’s figures.

After two years of being placed on hold, Amtrak’s cross-border service to Canada relaunched last month, bringing back international train travel between the United States and its Northern neighbor. Over in Europe, Germany launched a seasonal train pass, allowing passengers to travel to various destinations within the country for only 9 euros.

Happy Female Asian Traveler At The Airport Checking Her Phone

The irresistible offer, in place during summer, is the German Government’s bid to ease air traffic congestion and promote sustainable travel. Once a thing of the past, sleeper trains are making a comeback of their own as well, as slow/solo travel trends peak. You get our point: while airlines do not get their act together, it seems no one is in a rush to fly anywhere.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Mexico is keen on investing on its own rail infrastructure. More Tren Maya updates can be found on the Mexican Government’s website and at our partners’ The Cancun Sun, another Off Path Enterprises production specialized in Cancun/ Riviera Maya news.

Disney To Launch Newest Cruise Ship – Here’s What Travelers Can Expect

    Last Updated

Disney Cruise Line is finally all set to launch its newest cruise ship, having taken receipt of the vessel during the week. When it comes to travel, few experiences can match the magic, wonder and memories that are provided by a Disney vacation, with fun for all the family all but a guarantee – and the experience is just as magical out on the open seas as it is at a Disney theme park

Whether a Disneyphile, a cruise lover or simply a wanderlust traveler, the addition of a new ship to Disney’s fleet has something for all types of travelers to get excited about.

Here’s what travelers can expect from Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, including what kind of amenities it will have on board, which destinations it will be sailing to and how the magic of the happiest place on Earth is recreated on the waves.

Disney’s Latest Ship – Information For Travelers

Founded in 1995, Disney Cruise Line might not be the biggest name in the cruise industry, but it might just be the most loved. Sailing a number of different routes, such as along the Pacific Coast, the Caribbean and Europe, Disney Cruise Line currently has four ships in its fleet – Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy – but very soon, its total number of vessels will grow to five.

After years of waiting for the completion of the building process and test sailing events, Disney Cruise Line finally took ownership of their latest mega-ship, Disney Wish, which is the first of several planned Triton class ships for the company. The ship is scheduled to arrive at Port Canaveral on June 20th, before setting sail later on this year – much to the delight of Disney and cruise fans across the country.

As one may expect, Disney touches can be found all over the ship, from subtle motifs to immersive experiences. Each of the ship’s staterooms are “equipped with innovations that ensure the ultimate in comfort and relaxation for Guests of all ages”, and allow guests to relax in the utmost comfort whilst still tastefully carrying on the Disney theme throughout.

On board Wish, guests can expect to receive the royal Disney treatment. Kids both big and small can look forward to the world’s first Frozen-themed theatrical dining experience, where they will be treated to musical numbers by Elsa and Olaf whilst enjoying hearty Norwegian-inspired cuisine, all in honor of celebrating the engagement of Queen Anna and Kristoff. If that doesn’t float your boat, there’s also the Marvel cinematic dining experience, where you can look forward to meeting your favorite superheroes whilst enjoying top-quality cuisine.

The ship is packed full of things to do for people of ages. From Disney’s first attraction at sea, AquaMouse, to six different swimming pools and a specially designed Toy Story zone, Disney has pulled out all the stops for Disney Wish. Kids can enjoy a stellar Kids Club on Disney Wish, giving them the chance to meet their Disney favorites and enjoy a wide range of fun activities.

For adults, there are a series of subtly decorated Disney bars and restaurants to enjoy, including the Star Wars-themed Hyperspace Lounge and the Cinderella-esque Nightingale’s piano bar – though there are also several regular joints to enjoy when it all gets a bit too much. Quiet Cove is an adult-only district, complete with an infinity pool, bar, and cafe, providing the perfect place to slink away and enjoy being at sea.

The ship’s maiden voyage from Florida is scheduled July 14th, and will include a water salute to mark the occasion. Following that, it will leave for regular three and four-night sailings through to Nassau, The Bahamas, and Disney’s own island, Castaway Cay. With flight and hot prices reaching record highs, cruises are a top alternative for travelers – and the Disney Wish will be hard to beat.
