Fort Lauderdale is packed FULL of things to do, and that’s if you even feel the need to leave the W!

The W Fort Lauderdale has the perfect place to soak up the sun in style on its rooftop WET deck, complete with an amazing pool, cabanas, and staff walking around constantly to make sure your drink is always full.

Another cool thing about staying at the W Fort Lauderdale is the events they have at night. We were able to take part in cocktails with a live artist and music, and a really fun game night.

And don’t worry, if all you want to do is rest and relax, the AWAY spa is just an elevator ride away from your room. I’m still dreaming about the AMAZING massage I got while staying there.

Looking to get out of the hotel for a while? Fort Lauderdale won’t disappoint. Go for a bike ride along the beach, go rug-making, try a ton of different foods at Sistrunk Marketplace, or simply walk across the street to the gorgeous beach in front of the W.

If you’re looking for an amazing dinner spot, look no further than Rocco’s Tacos, and don’t leave without trying the freshly made guacamole! This was my favorite dinner of the trip and definitely a place I’ll be visiting again.

Additionally, there are several picturesque colonial-era towns a short two to three-hour drive away from Cancun, such as Merida, where you will find the oldest cathedral built in the mainland Americas, and Valladolid, with a historic center filled with 16th-century colonial mansions.

Mérida lies in the northwest corner of Yucatán state, close to the north coast of this peninsula.

Whether it’s pristine beaches or ancient ruins that take your fancy, Mérida’s location is an ideal base to explore the wide range of attractions in this amazing region of Mexico.

Mérida is about 75 miles east of the iconic Maya ruins at Chichen Itza and 50 miles north of the ancient city of Uxmal.

It’s also very close to many different cenotes (natural sinkholes, many of which you can swim in) – one of the closest being Cenote Xlacah.

Learn More About History

There’s no shortage of interesting historical sites in Mérida; even the main square – Plaza Grande – has hallmarks of both ancient and colonial history.

The Catedral de San Ildefonso is perhaps one of the most striking buildings – this cathedral was built on the site of a former Maya temple and even used some of the temple’s stone in its construction.

Elsewhere, buildings such as the Palacio Cantón, Casa de Montejo, and Teatro Peón Contreras give more insight into the history of this city.

The main attraction you should not miss is the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya – one of the best museums on Maya culture in the world with more than 1,000 different artifacts. If you want to immerse yourself, this is the place.

Live Like A Local

Mérida is one of those towns where it’s easy to feel like a local simply by being there for a few days.

Walk around the lively markets, take in the almost-nightly free music and entertainment in the plazas, or enjoy the hum of the city center crowds on the car-free Sunday mornings.

Despite its size and stature as the capital city of the Yucatán state, Mérida manages to maintain a small-town atmosphere with friendly folks and a strong sense of community.

Fantastic For Foodies

Mérida is one of the best places to sample the delicious food of the Yucatán, with plenty of restaurants and food vendors catering to all budgets.

One of the most iconic dishes is cochinita pibil, which is a barbecued pulled pork dish that has a deep and earthy flavor with varying degrees of spiciness.

Another highlight is sopa de lime (literally lime soup). It’s kind of what the name suggests, but usually has some meat such as chicken or turkey in it too.

The refreshing citrus flavor of this one comes from the Yucatecan limes of the region.

More Flights Being Added

While Cancún is the most obvious airport to fly into this part of Mexico, there is also an airport in Mérida, which is currently expanding its offering of flights with help from the local tourism organization.

It was recently reported that the airport here will soon have direct flights from Miami, Orlando, and Atlanta via Mexican airline Viva Aerobus and U.S. airline Delta.

This extends the list of American cities from which you can fly directly to Mérida, which already includes Houston, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York (Newark).

Good Transport Links

There are multiple reliable and affordable bus services that connect Mérida with Campeche in the west, and Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Chetumal in the east.

The city and wider area are also well serviced by taxis or other hired vehicles. You can even find ride apps such as Uber or Ryde & Go in operation.

If you are planning to visit an attraction that is a couple of hours drive away from Mérida, then a bus is usually a good option – that or hiring a driver between a group.

Why These Stunning Islands Are My Favorite Winter Getaway In Europe

We all have places we love and that we want to visit again and again.

Places where the weather is always perfect, the people are as warm and welcoming as the water, and there’s always something different to see and do.

For me that place is the Canary Islands. I love the Canary Islands so much that I am currently visiting them for the third time in 12 months!

Here’s why these stunning islands are my favorite winter getaway in Europe:

Year-Round Sunshine

One of the main attractions of the Canary Islands is that they boast year-round sunshine. This makes them a great place to escape to if you want to get away from the relentlessly cold winters of Northern Europe and North America!

Even in the coldest months of January and February the temperatures rarely drop below 21 degrees centigrade (70 degrees Fahrenheit) and the sea temperatures average 22 degrees centigrade (72 degrees Fahrenheit) so it’s warm enough to swim in the sea year-round too.

As an added bonus, the sun rises at around 6.30 am, sets at around 7.30 pm, and it rarely rains on the Canary Islands.

Despite this winter is the low season in the Canary Islands so crowd levels are very low. This means that you’ll have many of the best beaches to yourself and you can explore without any crowds.

Visiting this week as the winter season begins the weather is beautiful, the crowd levels are very low, and I haven’t needed reservations for any of the restaurants I wanted to eat in or activities I wanted to book. This includes snorkeling tours, surfing lessons, and even a camel safari.

Though there are public transport options available, I always hire a car in the Canary Islands. This is because some of the most beautiful beaches can be remote and difficult to access without one.

It also gives you the freedom to explore the islands at your own pace and to find hidden gems that are off the beaten path.

You can pass a sign advertising a renowned hiking trail, beautiful beach, or even that spontaneous camel ride, and just turn off if you want to experience something new.

Bufadero in Gran Canaria is a great example of this. This inlet forms a stunning natural swimming pool at low tide and is the perfect place for a beach day but is best accessed by car.

Fuerteventura is home to the famous ‘popcorn beach’, and this can also only be accessed by taking a car down a bumpy and narrow dirt track.

This unusual beach isn’t covered in sand but in dead algae, which looks prettier than it sounds! It takes on the appearance of kernels of popcorn. It’s an amazing natural phenomenon and makes a fab spot for a photo opportunity.

Endless Activities

The Canary Islands are a great location for active adventurers and each island offers something slightly different.

I love Fuerteventura because it offers the best surfing in Europe, especially during the winter when surfers descend on the island to catch its highest waves.

Corralejo is considered the island’s surf capital and Fuerteventura’s north shore is referred to as Europe’s Hawaii thanks to its huge swells. The surf community in Fuerteventura is huge and incredibly welcoming, even to enthusiastic beginners.

If you are a beginner keen to take to the waves then try Protest Surf School which is one of the most highly regarded on the island. The instructor I worked with was friendly and funny and made me feel incredibly at ease.

Tenerife is the island best for hikers and it has the most marked trails too. All of the Canary Islands are volcanic which means that the landscapes are exceptionally rugged and beautiful for hikers and walkers.

Lanzarote is home to Europe’s first underwater sculpture museum which I’m reliably informed is incredible for scuba divers.

Lanzarote is the most famous of the Canary Islands for divers and the underwater sculpture gallery is a unique experience away from the norm that you might expect when diving. But you’ll also find a spectacular array of underwater fauna to explore if you’re looking for something more traditional.

Inter-Island Travel

There are 8 main Canary Islands but only 4 of these are considered large tourist hubs. These are Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Tenerife. Tenerife is the largest island in the chain.

The islands are well-connected and easy to travel between. There are regular inter-island flights but the most economical and often fastest way to travel is by ferry.

The journey between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote is a great example of this. These two islands are incredibly close together, meaning the ferry ride takes just 25 minutes and prices range between 20-35 euros ($21-37 USD) depending on the operator you choose.

You can travel between islands for day trips or choose more than one vacation spot, allowing you to see as much of the Canary Islands are possible in a relatively short period of time.

If you’re staying in Fuerteventura then one of my favorite activities is to take the ferry from Corralejo to Timanfaya National Park on Lanzarote to visit the active volcano.

This is a popular excursion option and allows you to experience two of the different Canary Islands in a relatively short vacation.

Although the Canary Islands are officially a part of Spain geographically they sit close to the African coast. This explains why the weather is much warmer here than on mainland Spain and why the islands are often referred to as “the eternal spring.”

There’s nowhere I’d rather go to escape a long and cold winter.

Now that 2023 is nearing its end and the current year of travel is close to wrapping up, it is only natural that you may be thinking on which travel experiences you could have and new destinations you will visit in 2024.

Tuscany Is One Of The Trendiest Destinations For 2024

Tuscany is one of Italy’s most traditional regions, comprising parts of the country’s North-Central territories. It is a renowned center for the culture and arts and the proud home of some of the world’s most iconic manmade wonders.

We know Italy is more commonly associated, perhaps, with Rome’s millennia-old architectural feats, such as the Colosseum or Roman Forum, or even Venice’s winding canals lined by stately palaces, but Tuscany has no shortage of landmarks itself.

In case you are familiar with the province’s name but not its contents, the Tuscan heartland comprises hugely popular tourist destinations like Florence, the regional capital, Pisa, where the Leaning Tower can be found, and the numerous family-owned wineries and farms of Val d’Orcia.

On their yearly Best Regions to Travel list, Lonely Planet highlights Tuscany as the perfect place for embracing that ‘dolce vita’ and slowing it down.

A Gorgeous Capital City

As main attractions, the publication cites as many as 50 villages in Tuscany where ‘Etruscan heritage‘ can be spotted, a number of archaeological sites, and the Renaissance, as the Tuscan capital is where this philosophical movement that would inspire politics and the art originated from.

Florence is easily one of the most inspiring and intricately beautiful cities of Europe, with its polychrome-marble facades and defiant Brunelleschi dome, the largest brick one ever constructed.

Famous figures to have been born in Florence include Michelangelo, whose David is exhibited in the Gallery of the Academy of Florence, Galileo Galilei, the most celebrated astronomer and physicist in History, Leonardo da Vinci, the artful mind behind Mona Lisa, and many others.

Florence just oozes art in every corner, and you are certain to become as enamored with the city and its winding, ocher-colored alleys as the numerous poets, painters, and song makers who have made it their muse over the centuries.

Florence is, however, merely an entry point into the wider Tuscany.

An Idyllic, Picturesque Countryside

If it’s medieval History you’re fascinated by, you should definitely add the walled town of San Gimignano to your itinerary, as it features a row of perfectly-preserved 13th-century towers, as well as the charming Montepulciano, a cobblestone hilltop village surrounded by vineyards.

The Tuscan countryside is yet another point of interest, particularly for those keen on experiencing a more romantic, idyllic side of Italy.

You should expect long single-lane drives lined by neatly-arranged cypress trees and rolling green hills dotted with vineyards and quaint hillside villages.

In summer, the Tuscan coast is also one of Italy’s lesser-known, yet most beautiful sunny hotspots, with coastal resort towns like Versilia, where the iconic Hotel Principe di Piemonte is located, and Livorno, a colorful port town being hugged by the bright-blue Mediterranean Sea.

Of course, no visit to Tuscany would be complete without Pisa.

Leaning Towers And Tuscan Food

A short 50-minute train ride away from Florence, this classic city traversed by the River Arno boasts a high concentration of manmade wonders, most notably the Leaning Tower, a free-standing bell tower adjacent to the Pisa Cathedral that’s turned into a famous selfie spot.

Don’t worry, though. Unlike in Portofino, you will not get fined over US$300 for taking selfies leaning against or ‘supporting’ the tower – at least for now.

We’ve covered the architectural gems and world-class cities, but don’t get us started on the food.

Tuscan cuisine is certainly an immaterial cultural heritage of Italy as a whole, and you cannot leave without trying pappardelle al ragu di cinghiale (wild boar pasta, a regional delicacy), tripe sandwich (a local street favorite in Florence), or Florentine steak.

As you can see, there are enough points of interest in Tuscany to keep the History buff, culture lover, and foodie in you entertained for days, if not weeks on end.

It is an individual trip in its own right, and it’s no wonder it’s been picked as one of the top regions to visit in 2024.

When it comes to winter destinations, Northern Europe is one of the best places to go for many reasons. From the snowy weather to the cozy culture, there is a lot to love about this region in the cooler months.

For me, my favorite place for a winter getaway is the stunning country of Norway.

It seems that Norway is made for a winter wonderland vacation. From the Northern Lights to the snow-capped Fjords, there is so much to love here in the dreary winter months. It’s a great country for solo travelers, digital nomads, and just about everyone else (aside from the winter sun seekers and beach-goers).

The cities of Oslo and Bergen turn into something out of a postcard, and there are more than enough outdoor activities for those looking for some adrenaline. Not to mention, with more low-cost airlines, getting to Norway from the U.S. is shockingly cheap and easy.

Winter Wonderland

Norway is one of those countries that is beautiful in any weather, when the sun-drenched fjords come to life in the spring, to the hot green summers, and the pop of colors in the magical fall. But in my opinion, if there is one season when Norway’s beauty really shines, it would be winter.

When the rest of Europe is gloomy and solemn, Norway turns into a winter wonderland. For anyone looking to try some snowy activities, this place is for you.

Fairy Tale Cities And Towns

Looking at a map, you will notice just how huge the country of Norway is, and therefore, the sheer number of villages and towns scattered throughout is mind-blowing. Some are more remote than others, some more magical looking, but they are all pretty and unique.

Even Bergen, Norway’s second-largest city and officially the rainiest city in Europe, is simply adorable with a small-town feel. With its charming harbor and funicular up the mountain for some epic views over the fjords, Bergen is a crowdpleaser in the winter weather.

But it’s the smaller villages and towns dotting the fjords that most come to see, with their bright colors standing out against the white wilderness, almost beckoning you to come to visit their village and hear their stories.

Epic Train Rides

Taking the train across Norway is one amazing experience, and in the winter it’s even more magical. The rail system is easy to navigate, and the stations are mostly spotless and efficient. While certain trains are more scenic than others, even the ones that go through the less stunning bits of the countryside are still spectacular.

One can’t-miss adventure is taking the Flåm Railway; you can connect in the town of Myrdal and head down on one of the steepest train tracks in the world. You snake your way down the countryside and into the fjords and end up in the postcard-perfect village of Flåm.

After, you can take a ferry such as The Hardangerfjord Express down the fjord into other towns, or stay the night at the local cozy hotel with its on-site brewery and Viking-style restaurant, which is an experience in itself.

The Northern Lights

If you know one thing about Norway, it is probably that it is one of the best countries to spot the Northern Lights (although you don’t necessarily have to go that far), especially in the winter months. While they are visible throughout many parts of the country, it’s up north into the Arctic Circle where you will have the best luck.

One city that is a popular choice is the cozy fishing haven of Tromsø, where you can enjoy some special dishes, drink a beer at the world’s most northern brewery, and then set off on an epic tour to chase the lights when the sun goes down.

One Cool Capital

Oslo is an underrated Scandinavian city, often outshined by its more charming counterparts, such as Stockholm or Copenhagen, but there is a lot to love in this moody capital city.

First of all, getting around the city is a breeze thanks to the easy-to-use tram, connecting the cooler areas like Grünerløkka to the main part of town and beyond.

You can’t miss the iconic opera house jutting out of the water in angles and shades of grey and white that resemble ice sheets. Walk around the roofs and take in the views of the city; just be careful as it does get slippery.

The wharf district of Aker Brygge has some great waterfront restaurants, and you can walk along the water and marvel at the locals dipping in the ice-cold water, followed by their sauna around the fire.

With everyone seemingly getting their news through social media these days, it’s hard to fathom how such a place as gorgeous as Bozcaada flies under the radar.

You would think travel influencers would be screaming up and down, begging to show off a place known as ‘Heaven on Earth’ and ‘The Maldives of Turkiye’.

Or perhaps locals want this Turkish treasure to remain unnoticed. Sorry Turkiye, but the secret is about to be unleashed to the general public.

We know you already have Istanbul and so many beautiful coastal cities along the Black Sea. Can’t you share Bozcaada with us too?

Formerly known as Tenedos, this tiny island home to approximately 500 residents will blow you away with how stunning it is, from the crystal blue waters and laid-back vibes to charming, colorful streets.

In particular, Sulubahçe Beach is what makes it feel as if you are in a remote paradise reminiscent of The Maldives.

We’ve all stepped into the ocean to make sure it passes the test of being able to see our feet. Sulubahçe Beach far exceeds the test, and despite being unable to swim most days due to cold waters, the scenery is immaculate.

It will easily become one of your all-time favorite beaches.

A Fairy-tale Island

Not only is the scenery some of the best you could ever imagine, but the small-town charm is to die for. Comparable to Greece, visitors will find themselves oohing and ahhing on every street.

In fact, it was a Greek island until the 1920s when it joined the Turkish Republic. Greece’s loss is Turkiye’s gain, where locals have been flocking for sunny days for over a century now.

It is estimated roughly a million Turkish people visit during the summer since it is so easy and affordable ($30 ferry) to reach from mainland Turkey, which obviously means it’s easy for you too once you fly in.

It’s no mystery why locals love it, whether it’s cozy cafes, vibrant storybook houses, or the timeless cobblestone streets we have all pictured in our minds for our dream vacay.

That’s why recent visitors have dubbed it a ‘fairy-tale island’. Not to mention, the extremely affordable hotels are often as low as $40 per night.

Even though Bozcaada feels like a Greek island, the Turkish currency (lira) tends to give tourists more bang for their buck.

A Place To Indulge

Less money spent on hotels gives you more money for experiences. Of course, you could see one of the most well-preserved castles in Turkiye (Bozcaada Kalesti), or you could spend your day indulging in amazing Greek and Turkish cuisine and local wine.

The choice is yours, but when you’re in a destination that mixes 2 delicious cuisines, it’s hard to pass up, especially when you can sit on a patio and take in the vast scenery all while pleasing your tastebuds.

Most of the cuisine you will find is Greek, yet there are some Turkish dishes here and there. However, wine selection remains strictly Turkish as it’s produced locally in Bozcaada from a variety of grapes.

Your palate will not be disappointed spending your day indulging in the finer things in life. The island may be small, but it’s home to many vineyards and restaurants with both unforgettable food and unmatched scenery.
