`Sargassum seaweed continues to accumulate along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, with a number of beaches in the area battling an excessive landfall. Playa El Recodo, one of the most popular beaches in Playa Del Carmen, is one of those greatly affected, with local authorities announcing the natural attraction will remain off-limits temporarily.

Recently, Mexico has quickly started adding seaweed barriers to popular destinations around Quintana Roo, including Playa Del Carmen, in a desperate attempt to save other beaches from meeting the same fate.

El Recodo Most Affected Beach In Playa Del Carmen

While several tourist hotspots up and down Quintana Roo have all been affected by seaweed to some extent, it’s Playa Del Carmen that’s been making the headlines lately, as the natural phenomenon intensifies in the area.

In fact, local authorities have just announced that El Recodo beach, one of the top-rated in the resort town, will be closed for visitors and sunseekers for the whole of the upcoming Easter holidays, and until the cleaning work has been finished.

    Seaweed On A Tropical Beach

Currently, the Sargassum removal has been carried out daily, though the overwhelming volume of seaweed has led Playa Del Carmen officials to determine ‘it is not in a condition to be used by bathers‘.

Despite the town’s best efforts in preventing similar closures, it cannot completely avoid the arrival of seaweed, as temperatures rise and the algae reproduce on a larger scale. In late March, as much as 80 tonnes of seaweed were collected from beaches in Playa Del Carmen, and the situation has remained dramatic since.

Playa Del Carmen Ramping Up Cleaning At Popular Beaches

Zofemat, the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone, which oversees natural phenomena in the area, has sent both workers and more machinery have been deployed to clean the beach, but decided not to re-open it to bathers for the time being.

Playa El Recodo features the iconic sandy beaches and crystal clear waters that are characteristic of the Mexican Caribbean, which makes its closure ahead of the highly-anticipated Eastern weekend all the more troubling.

    Beach Closed Sign

Besides Playa El Recodo, the equally popular Punta Esmeralda beach will also remain closed to tourists, in order to allow the local dunes to regenerate and mitigate impacts on the color of the water.

Even though it received its first seaweed barrier as soon as early April, and ahead of other neighboring destinations, Playa Del Carmen has not managed to completely thwart the threat to its busy tourism season, with vacationers arriving for Mexico’s Semana Santa now having fewer beaches to choose from.

As reported by La Jornada Maya, over 200 workers have joined the Zofemat brigade in collecting Sargassum from the beaches. Other measures have also been taken, including the recruitment of several researchers, academics and scientists to assist the local government in managing the crisis.

    Is Seaweed Dangerous To Bathers?

It is worth noting Sargassum is not particularly dangerous to beachgoers, unless they are swimming in seaweed-infested deep waters, as people have been known to get entangled in them and subsequently drowning.

Red Seaweed At Tropical Mexican Beach, Mexico

Usually, it simply leaves beaches with a more unpleasant ‘polluted’ look, although its reproduction, which leads to accumulation on beaches, is a natural process attributed to a warmer water temperature. As they are bound to become hotter in the upcoming months, this will continue being a concern for tourists visiting the coastline of Mexico.

Local Ecology And Environment Secretary, Efraín Villanueva, has confirmed several sea vessels have been positioned strategically in the area to speed up cleaning, and a further 9-thousand meter barrier will be installed around the beach, on top of the already installed 2,700 meters.

Additionally, 4 tractors with sweepers will make sure any Sargassum that does reach the sandbanks is cleared, besides the usual monitoring of the Oceanographic Institute of the Gulf and the Caribbean Sea.

Is Mexico’s Tourism Season Under Threat?

Besides seaweed, the US Department of State also published a map detailing Mexican states Americans should avoid.

Famous Playa Del Carmen 5th Avenue Tourist District At Mayan Riviera, Mexico

While Quintana Roo, which houses Playa Del Carmen, Cancun, Tulum, and many others was not classed as a particularly dangerous destination, US authorities now urge Americans to ‘exercise an increased degree of caution’ when traveling to the state.

An increase in crime in tourist zones is the main reason behind the revised travel advisory, and the seaweed itself, as previously stated, does not present a particular health threat to tourists. It should also not affect tourism in Quintana Roo, as destinations like Cancun are already sold out for the Easter period.

In spite of recent setbacks, Mexico has been increasing policing in beaches across the Riviera Maya lately, and taking other measures to ensure arrivals feel safe and have the best possible experience during their breaks.

After more than two years of countless updates to its entry requirements and travel warnings, Jamaica is fully reopening to all travelers without restrictions.

Set to come into effect on Friday, April 15, 2022, Jamaica has decided to lift its pre-departure Covid test requirements for travelers. The pre-departure test was the last remaining Covid-related entry requirement in place for international arrivals to Jamaica.

As a result, the Caribbean island nation will be the latest country to lift all of its Covid health-related entry restrictions for international tourists.

    Pre-Departure Testing Requirement Scrapped

Jamaica’s current travel restrictions state that all visitors, regardless of vaccination status, must show a negative Covid test result (antigen or PCR) no later than 3 days from travel prior to boarding their flight. This requirement will be dropped for all travelers from tomorrow, April 15th, regardless of vaccination status.

Jamaica’s Indoor Mask Mandate Also Being Dropped April 15th

Internal health restrictions are also being dropped throughout the Caribbean island nation. On the same day that the pre-departure testing requirement will be removed, Jamaica’s ongoing mask mandate for public indoor spaces will also be dropped for tourists and locals alike.

The current measures were put in place on March 18 under an official Public Health Enforcement Measures Covid-19 Order, which included the pre-flight testing and face mask requirement. The other measures included in the Order will remain in place for the time being, according to local reports. They are:

    • All persons who test positive for Covid while in Jamaica (local or tourist) must self-isolate at their accommodation until they’ve recovered.
    • Giving the protection of identity for persons who might test positive for Covid.
    • Owners and operators of businesses (hotels, restaurants, tour agencies), places of worship, educational institutions, etc, are required to ensure the health of all patrons by making sure hand washing/hand sanitizing stations are available upon entry.

Officials want to remind everyone that while the reported Covid case numbers in Jamaica are low at this time, the issue of new variants and the potential for case numbers to increase continues to be a reality.

Governor Carlos Joaquín said the Cancun region will remain in the covid ‘green zone’ and that beaches are safe for tourists

The Mexican government has been working hard to meet future tourists’ expectations during the Easter holidays. The tasks have included pandemic, criminal and nature control.

According to a recent update shared on the Mexican tourism portal Nitu, local authorities and the private sector in Quintana Roo have announced that beaches in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum are safe and ready for tourists.

On Thursday, governor Carlos Joaquín shared important information: The Quintana Roo region will remain in the green zone during the following weeks and the strategies to guarantee visitors’ safety and clean the beaches have been successful.

The green zone refers to the safe level of Mexico’s epidemiological traffic light system. Carlos Joaquin explained that from April 4 to 10 the green light will continue.

Joaquin also explained how different authorities and members of the tourism sector worked together—from diplomats to police officers, to business owners, to tour operators— to prepare for the 3 million tourists expected to visit Cancun for Easter. An economic boom highly cherished by authorities and locals.

The government and businesses in the region have been sharing communication campaigns on the safety of popular destinations. The president of the Hotels of Tulum Association, David Ortiz Mena, said that these campaigns will have a positive impact and benefit the touristic destinations and those who live and enjoy the natural local beauty.

    The Challenges For Local Authorities

Tourism is the core of the state of Quintana Roo’s economy which includes fascinating destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, and Tulum, and constitutes the main source of income for people and companies in the region.

Colorful village on beautiful Holbox island

Local authorities and businesses have been working together to face the main challenges and please traditional visitors like US and Canadian citizens.

These are the main situations local authorities had to address:

    Excess Of Seaweed

Before the beaches of Cancun and Playa del Carmen got flooded by the brown algae called sargassum, local authorities decided to add seaweed barriers to protect the main popular beaches. The sargassum isn’t dangerous, but this strategy will prevent visitors from uncomfortable experiences including strong smells.

Governor Carlos Joaquin also made emphasis on the importance of understanding the nature and behavior of the sea sargassum to prevent and remove it from the coasts. Carlos Joaquin insisted that it is a shared responsibility that local authorities, citizens and businesses share.

    Local Crime

International tourists and locals are concerned about safety in Cancun.  The government and the police have been working hard to fight organized crime and assure tourists a secure vacation.

Recently, authorities discovered massage and jet ski tents used for drug trafficking and dismantled those involved. The beaches have been cleaned and police authorities are also developing strategies to protect and maintain a safe environment.

For this peak season, the governor has also requested tourists and locals to respect the legal framework of the state and avoid buying and consuming drugs, as well as exposing themselves to dangerous situations.

    Covid-19

Just like every other country, Mexico has also faced the consequences of the covid–19, especially in tourism. The government has implemented plans to guarantee local safety, including the traffic light system.

International visitors are allowed and Cancun recently dropped its mandatory outdoor mask mandate, and, fortunately, good conditions are projected in the future. Travelers will be able to enjoy and take advantage of the beautiful beaches in Cancun. Regarding this point, the governor reminded citizens to get vaccinated and complete their vaccination schemes to achieve immunization.

Those traveling to Cancun during Easter can expect a more controlled environment and a high-quality stay. Hotel occupancy has already surpassed 85% for Easter and millions of tourists are about to experience the blue and warm waters of the beaches and the fascinating landscapes of the region.

Mexico’s most popular tourist destination, Cancun, will experience a rush of 3 million tourists for Easter this year, selling out all of the hotels in the city. Quintana Roo projects hotel occupancy above 85% for Easter with a risk of being completely booked by the time of the holiday. The influx of tourists is expected to cause an economic boom for the Cancun tourism industry.

    Why Is Mexico So Popular?

Cancun is home to some of the most luxurious and beautiful hotels in the world. The destination serves as a staple for spring breakers, family vacationers, and couples looking for a romantic getaway. Mexico’s, and more specifically Cancun’s, proximity to the United States makes it an easy destination for people in the US and Canada to get to.

Flights to Mexico are generally cheaper and faster than flights to other popular tourist destinations in Europe or Asia. Plus, Mexico shares time zones with the US, making it the perfect place for digital nomads and remote workers to set up a base and work from.

Mexico currently has some no covid restrictions for entry. Entering the country is a breeze, with no pre-departure covid test required. In fact, it’s one of a growing list of countries in the world without any covid related entry requirements. Once inside, Mexico has relaxed COVID restrictions and Cancun has just dropped the requirements to wear masks outdoors

    Growing So Fast

Mexico became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world during the peak of the COVID pandemic. This super fast growth did come with some growing pains though. The country suffered from overtourism for months and it caused a bit of a problem for some of the countries popular airports. Some travelers reported waiting as long as 2 hours to get through immagration. Though it seems that these problems have subsided.

There was also a spike in crime at some popular tourist destinations. The government has been versatile in dealing with these issues though, most likely not wanting to ruin the economic boom coming from the spike in tourism.

    The Future Looks Bright

Many people expected the tourism boom to end when the pandemic fizzled, but that seems to not be the case. A wild spring break and now a likely sold out Easter weekend show that Mexico’s popularity is sustainable and some companies are confident in this.

American hotel giant, Hilton, is planning to expand its network in Mexico this year with 15 new hotels and resorts. In an interview with MILENIO, Juan Corvinos, vice president of development for Latin America and the Caribbean for Hilton stated, “Our prospects for Mexico are very good and the development team will continue working to make it so. We have aggressive growth plans, we will arrive before the end of the year with these 15 hotels, we have many scheduled openings”

Hilton is not alone. Eleven brand new resorts have just opened in Cancun and we can expect many more to be opening in the future.

    Better Book Fast

With two weeks to go before Easter and hotels already at 85% capacity, you better book fast if you plan on visiting Cancun on your Easter weekend!

Ready to get back out there? Entry requirements and mask mandates are dropping in many parts of the world and tourists are being welcomed back as we go forward in 2022.

These destinations have eliminated their entry restrictions for travelers, including mask mandates. If you’re looking to plan a spring or summer getaway, find out more about what these destinations have lots to offer.

From exploring the idyllic coastline of Galway, Ireland, to soak up some sun, culture, and food in San Juan, Puerto Rico, here are 10 amazing cities where you can visit mask-free.

10 Cities Worldwide That Tourists Can Visit Mask-Free

    Victoria, British Columbia

The weather is warming up and beautiful British Columbia is open and ready to be explored. Head over to Vancouver Island and get to know the capital city of Victoria.

The province dropped its mask mandate this month, and proof of vaccination to access a number of services will only be required until April 8th. And as of April 1st, pre-departure Covid tests will no longer be required from all international arrivals to Canada.

The spring and summer months means it’s the perfect time to stroll Victoria’s beautiful waterfront, the Inner Harbour. This is a great starting point for exploring downtown Victoria – go shopping, wander through the boutiques and restaurants and even stop by the iconic Empress Hotel. To end the day, head over to Red Fish Blue Fish (a local favorite) for a big plate of fish and chips.
