While American travelers are enjoying or getting ready for spring break travel, the government of the United States has just issued a travel warning for one of the top destinations this season: Mexico.

The U.S. State Department shared on Monday an official travel warning addressing multiple concerns, recognizing safety threats, and sharing advice related to current events.

The document published on the website of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico explains to travelers the main factors to consider when planning travel to this country, including risks of crime, drugs, assault, medication, and other warnings like drowning and arrests.

A list of actions to take when traveling to Mexico—like reading the Mexico Travel Advisory page, recommendations for safety applications that travelers can download, and general warnings— has also been included.

Considering top spring break destinations, authorities have specifically addressed locations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and other popular beach destinations in the Quintana Roo region.

Just a few weeks ago, the U.S. The State Department issued a special travel advisory for U.S. citizens visiting Cancun related to disputes and violent incidents between taxis and Uber drivers in the region.

While American authorities warn travelers about travel to Mexico, the Mexican government assures tourists that Mexico is a safe destination.

Considering the current situation in Mexico, there are new updates for tourists. Here’s what travelers should know about this recent travel advisory shared by the American government:

Factors To Consider When Traveling To Mexico

The U.S. government states that most visitors travel safely in Mexico —Cancun is still considered a safe destination for many travelers— but those planning a trip to this country should bear in mind multiple factors.

Regarding safety, travelers are encouraged to maintain high levels of awareness and avoid risky situations since crime (including violent crime) can occur even in popular tourist destinations like Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Tulum, especially after dark.

U.S. citizens have also been victims of assault, and lonely or drunk travelers have been targeted.

Authorities also remind travelers about illegal actions and behaviors in Mexico and that Mexican law is different from American law, and travelers should keep this in mind.

The document highlights that guns and ammunition are illegal, as well as drug possession—including medical marijuana—, public urination, and drinking and driving. Those who violate these terms can be arrested.

U.S. citizens are warned about consuming drugs or unregulated alcohol as travelers have been injured by contaminated alcohol, synthetic drugs, and adulterated prescription pills. Counterfeit medication has also been reported. Travelers should consult with medical professionals and buy medicine from reputable establishments.

In case of emergency or need for medical attention, the document mentions that private hospitals might be more expensive in Mexico than in the United States and that payment in cash might be required. This is one reason it is always good to buy travel insurance.

Concerning natural factors, it warns about rip tides and strong undercurrents, as well as a lack of security measures and lifeguards. Drowning has been considered a relevant factor of risk for visitors.

Travelers are advised to respect legal terms of stay as well with regards to visas, as violating those terms can result in detention or fines.

- Stay in groups of friends and know your drinking companions, especially at night and at clubs and bars.
- Monitor credit cards to confirm all transactions are correct, bring limited cash, and be careful when withdrawing money from ATMs.
- Keep family and friends informed of travel plans.
- Download the “Guest Assist” application when traveling in the Quintana Roo region for relevant updates, information, and assistance for travelers.
- Keep passports safe.
- Travelers can Contact U.S. Embassy or Consulate if they need assistance.

Americans Should Expect Less Travel Disruption Vacationing In Europe This Summer

If you jet off to Europe last summer immediately after the continent fully reopened for tourism, amid the post-pandemic travel frenzy, you might have realized, much to your dismay, that airports were not prepared for such an unprecedented surge in travel demand.

Back then, last-minute cancelations, long delays, winding queues and severe staff shortages became the norm. After nearly three years of being barred from visiting, almost every American sought entry into Europe, and regardless of any mitigation measures in place, it was downright chaos.

Seeing that the appetite for travel is currently the highest it’s ever been, many predicted summer 2023 would be a mere extension of last year’s woes, but it could be the exact opposite. According to experts, travelers should in fact expect less travel disruption vacationing in Europe in the future:

Europe Is Better Prepared To Deal With Pent-Up Demand

According to ACI Europe, an airports’ organization, the European zone should be able to cope with demand this summer, and the capacity caps that affected operations across major hubs last year, including Frankfurt, Schiphol and Heathrow, will be the exception rather than the rule.

At the peak of the crisis, these airports were forced to cut down the number of flights allowed per hour in order to adapt to the far more limited staffing levels, and the sudden spike in passenger numbers. The move led to a wave of cancellations and other severe disruption between the months of June and August.

Other airports like Dublin International faced extremely long wait times, with passengers who arrived many hours ahead of their flight being held up at security and prevented from boarding as a result of long delays. Things would only improve in the fall, when the peak travel season came to an end.

Luckily, Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI Europe, has now reassured potential visitors that airports are more prepared to manage the busy air traffic come summer, as ‘they have reached out to all their operational partners’ to identify both risks and ‘stress points’.

Staffing Levels Are Sufficient

One particular concern is staffing levels, which remained way below the required minimum for such a sharp spike in travel bookings. According to Jankovec, not only airports, but also airlines, ground handlers, border control forces and air traffic control will ramp up their mitigation efforts.

In countries like the U.K., which at the beginning of 2022 was already struggling with a severe shortage of border officers, long customs delays had become all but inevitable. While we are not able to make country-based predictions, Americans traveling to Britain in 2023 may not be as badly affected as their peers who visited in 2022 following mass hiring campaigns.

In Jankovec’s own words, ‘by and large, the aviation system capacity on the ground should cope with demand, and capacity limitations will remain the exception‘. British Airways (BA) Chief Executive Sean Doyle added himself he is ‘confident’ there won’t be a repetition of last summer’s woeful stories.

Doyle notes they have ‘come a long way very quickly’, and that resourcing and operability are ‘in a much better shape than last year’. In actual figures, BA has hired more than 7,500 new staff since launching a major recruitment campaign last year.

Europe Is Nearing A Full Recovery

Other data shared by ACI Europe shows how close Europe is to returning to its pre-pandemic form. In January 2023, passenger traffic was only 11 percent lower than January 2019, with roughly 42 percent of European airports having already recovered their pre-crisis traffic.

The excellent indicators can be attributed to the continent’s resumption of normality and lifting of all border measures, a move which has encouraged American tourists, and all other visiting nationalities, to journey across the pond more. With the exception of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia – for obvious reasons – all European nations are now open for tourism restriction-free.

Some of Europe’s fastest-recovering tourist destinations this year, in terms of air traffic, include Portugal, Cyprus, Croatia, Malta and Romania. On the other hand, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Germany lag behind at least by 30 percent compared to the pre-COVID years.

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, was quoted saying ‘with strong travel demand continuing through the traditionally slower winter season in the Northern hemisphere, the stage is set for an even busier spring and summer.’

When you think about traveling in Europe, there is certainly no shortage of amazing countries to choose from, with most offering cities, small towns, and beaches, with history and culture at every turn. While there are certain destinations that are more popular than others, there are also some countries that fly under the radar amongst travelers and therefore remain hidden gems.

One of these hidden gems is Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nestled in the heart of the Balkan region, this country is filled with beauty, warmth, and seemingly countless other reasons to visit. While the Balkans have seen a vast increase in tourism in the past couple of years, some countries have emerged more popular than others.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those places that has remained a bit of a secret amongst travelers, and the country is hoping to change that with a reinvested interest in bringing travelers in.

Here is why Bosnia and Herzegovina should be on your travel radar this year:

Culture & History

To get to know Bosnia and Herzegovina, start in the vibrant capital of Sarajevo. A favorite amongst those who visit, this city is jam-packed with history and wears the scars of its horrific past for the world to see. Just look for the ‘Sarajevo roses’ all over the pavement, with the markings of past shells that have been painted red to commemorate those who lost their lives in the world’s longest siege that gripped the city in the 90s.

With a history so complex, getting into it here would not do it justice. A visit to Sarajevo will educate travelers on the major plot lines of what they need to know. Just be aware that the country is home to three main ethnic groups, Bosniaks, Serbians, and Croats. And the Bosnian war (to sum it up) was fought amongst these groups, although now they live alongside each other more or less peacefully.

Walk along the bridge where Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated, resulting in World War I, and explore the Tunnel Of Hope, a passageway under the airport runway that the residents used to stay alive while under attack from the nearby mountains.

Aside from the heartbreaking lessons that you can learn about the country’s past, visitors will find Sarajevo a hip city that’s full of life. Budget Friendly

As with most of its Balkan neighbors, one big plus with visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina is the fact that it remains an incredibly budget-friendly destination, and your money will go much farther here than in other European countries.

In fact, this is one of the cheapest countries in Europe, with food and drink coming in way less than even nearby Croatia or Montenegro. Accommodation and transportation are also much cheaper here, and one bonus is that there really isn’t ‘high season’ here yet, meaning there are no price increases depending on the month you visit.

Nature For All Seasons

While there isn’t technically a high and low season, there are, of course, times of the year when more and fewer people visit. Similar to many countries in the surrounding area, the tourism season here is centered around April, June, July, August, and September. While these warmer months offer the chance to experience the country during its long and sunny days, sometimes the heat can get a bit much. Mostar, for example, can get a bit crowded, with its narrow and windy lanes filled with tourists, some of whom come on day trips from cruises that have docked at nearby Croatia.

Those who are looking for a beach holiday will often not consider Bosnia and Herzegovina, although the small 20km stretch of coast along the Adriatic makes it the second smallest coastline in the world and does offer some beaches.

Popular places to visit in the warmer months include Una National Park, Jajce, and of course, Mostar. Watch the divers on Start Most collect money from onlookers before they make the trying plunge into the shallow waters below and enjoy the picturesque restaurants with terraces that hang over the Neretva River.

Winter activities are popular here in February and March when the winter sun shines, and the days are starting to grow longer than in December and January. The mountain towns are especially picturesque when covered in snow, and skiing and other winter sports are popular here (after all, it did host the Winter Olympics). Not only is hitting the slopes here much cheaper than in other European countries, but the number of dreamy winter lodges makes it an ideal place to cozy up from the cold.

Food & Drink

First things first, drinking Bosnian coffee might be worth the trip on its own. Although some say it’s nearly identical to Turkish coffee, it still should be experienced to be understood. The daily ritual of taking a small cup of strong coffee from the copper-plated pot, topping it off with a bit of sugar, and finishing it off with a small Turkish delight candy, is a must-do while visiting. Just remember not to tip the whole cup back and drink the thick grounds from the bottom, as I may or may not have done my first time.

Coffee aside, Bosnian cuisine is similar to its Balkan neighbors and is meat and bread heavy, with an emphasis on seasonal vegetables and stewed pots of deliciousness. Cevapi is a popular choice amongst people from all walks of life, and the grilled sausages are served with raw onions and grilled bread.

Another famous grab-and-go dish is Burek, which is a stuffed pasty well known among many Balkan countries. Desserts are worth the calories here as well, and the fruit-based Tufahija or biscuity Hurmašica are both popular options.

Writing an article about Bosnia and Herzegovina and not mentioning the country’s growing wine scene would be a shame, as the over 2 million cases that they produce are winning over more visitors each year. Most of the grapes come from the area surrounding Mostar, and the most well-known variety is Žilavka. Much more budget-friendly than other options, a bottle of Bosnian wine pairs perfectly with your grilled meats and stewed vegetables.

Easily Accessible

Having been recognized as a “candidate country” by the EU, Bosnia and Herzegovina is working to become more connected to other European cities. While buses, roads, and rail within the country are developing (very slowly, as some locals might say), access from nearby neighboring countries is pretty straightforward. Many come from Croatia, starting from the cities of Split or Dubrovnik. Busses from Serbia and Montenegro are options as well.

There are a few other airports in the country, but Sarajevo is by far the biggest and most popular option for travelers coming from further afield than the Balkan states. Although it was previously serviced by budget airline Wizz Air, the company has left this route and now Sarajevo International Airport is in talks with Ryanair to establish a hub here.

So, for now, budget airlines are not an option to fly into Sarajevo, but Turkish air and other main carriers are good options for connection routes. For example, when trying to return to New York in 2021, I found a much cheaper ticket from Sarajevo (with a short connection in Istanbul) than I could find in nearby Split, Croatia.

So while it might not be the easiest place to find cheap flights to, it’s definitely possible to fly here for a lower cost than some other nearby cities, and of course, a bit of flexibility with the dates helps as well.

U.S. State Department Has Travel Warnings In Place For These 6 Regions In Mexico

Travelers heading to Mexico this winter or for spring break should take caution or, in some instances, consider canceling their trip. The U.S. State Department has travel advisories in place for all but two Mexican states. Six Mexican states are under the most severe level 4 “do not travel” advisory.

Rather than issue a blanket travel warning for the entire country, the U.S. Department of State assesses the risk level of each of Mexico’s 32 states and issues a separate advisory for each state. The warnings are based on the threat level to U.S. citizens, including government employees, expats, digital nomads, and tourists.

Why Are There Travel Warnings In Mexico?

Travel warnings can be issued for any number of reasons, but in Mexico’s instance, it is due to an increased risk of violent crime. According to the State Department’s warning, homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery is currently widespread in Mexico. Additionally, the U.S. government and local authorities have limited ability to help Americans who need assistance in certain areas.

Recent incidents have included violence that erupted in the state of Sinaloa and an ongoing dispute between Uber and taxi drivers that has become aggressive in Cancun. While violence and kidnappings are generally not targeted toward tourists, there have been incidents where innocent bystanders have been injured or killed during altercations.

What Does The Travel Warning Mean?

The U.S. government has urged Americans to obey the same restrictions they have placed on U.S. government employees in Mexico. Specifically, U.S. government employees are advised to:
- Avoid travel between cities after dark
- Avoid hailing taxis on the street
- Do not travel alone, especially in remote areas
- Do not drive from the U.S. – Mexico border to interior parts of the country, with a few exceptions
Additionally, there are precautions tourists can take to reduce their risk of danger while visiting Mexico. Specifically, all visitors should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and inform family back home of their plans. Travelers should also avoid displaying obvious signs of wealth and be extra cautious when visiting ATMs or banks.

What To Do If You Need Help In Mexico?

If you do find yourself needing assistance while visiting Mexico, you can call for help by dialing 911. Inform local authorities of any issues and file a Mexican police report if needed. Additionally, U.S. citizens should also contact the U.S. Embassy or the nearest consulate if help is needed. The embassy can help find medical care, provide a list of local attorneys, and help arrange accommodation and flights home in the case of an emergency.

Which Mexican Locations Have A Travel Warning?

Six Mexican states currently have a level 4 “do not travel” warning, and seven states are under a level 3 “reconsider travel” advisory. All but 2 of the remaining states are under a level 2 advisory where travelers should “exercise increased caution”. The only 2 regions with no current advisory are Campeche and Yucatan. That means that most of Mexico’s popular tourist destinations are currently under advisory. Below is a list of the advisories, along with popular tourist destinations within that state.

If being active on your vacation gives you anxiety, you’re not alone. There’s a more popular type of travel that has Americans adding relaxing locations to their wish lists. Dubbed the “nothing-cation” – also known as a trip where relaxation and warm weather are the main highlights, this type of travel is becoming more popular with travelers, and they aren’t feeling guilty about it.

Expedia recently conducted a survey of travelers and found that more than 34% of Americans are feeling burnt out after all the festivities of the holidays (especially parents), and almost everyone (96%) plans to do absolutely nothing on their next trip.

It’s no surprise that January comes as the top month for booking beach vacations. It’s the middle of winter, and people are sick and tired of cold and rain. What better time to travel? Some also see it as a great way to reduce anxiety and kick-start the new year.

Expedia found that about a quarter of getaways planned in January are to beach destinations, such as Mexico’s Cancun and Riviera Maya, Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana, and Hawaii’s Oahu, which have all doubled in demand compared to the previous year.

“There’s a time and place for an action-packed vacation itinerary, but our data shows the first trip after the hectic holiday season calls for a more relaxed agenda,” says Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group brands public relations in a press release. “For most travelers, getting the most out of their next vacation means setting aside dedicated time for nothing.”

There’s no need to feel guilty about doing nothing because almost two-thirds of travelers (62%) agree that “doing nothing” is the best part of a vacation and think it is time well-spent. The travel experts at Expedia have put together 7 destinations where you can enjoy a “nothing-cation”.

Another Southeast Asian destination has lifted all Covid requirements returning to normal ahead of 2023. With immediate effect, Americans are no longer be subject to strict health controls traveling to Laos which is one of the most beautiful, and awe-inspiring countries in the sub-continent.

After sealing itself off from the rest of the world for most of the pandemic, Southeast Asia began to timidly reopen for tourism earlier this year as Covid cases dwindled. Fast forward a few months, and foreigners are welcome across a majority of states without restrictions or any border formalities, making it one of the easiest regions in the world to travel.

Luckily for the unvaccinated, the reopening trend is showing no signs of slowing down, even after the latest viral surge arising from China:

The Only Landlocked Country In Southeast Asia Is Lifting All Border Restrictions

2 years and 9 months after the World Health Organization issued a historical declaration confirming Covid as a pandemic, prompting numerous countries across the globe to shut down in response and clamp down on leisure travel, the small and gorgeous, but often overlooked nation of Laos is finally ready to reinstate normality.

Similarly to its closest neighbors, namely Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia decided to fully abolish all health-related border mandates on December 28, in the lead up to the New Year – it turns out Kayak editors were right when they boldly claimed that 2023 would be a ‘comeback year‘ for Asia, after all…

Entering Laos in 2023, Americans and all other incoming passengers will no longer be required to present a vaccination card, nor undergo testing prior to departure when failing to qualify as fully immunized. Additionally, all on-arrival and post-arrival testing policies applying to the latter group have been canceled, ending months of vaccine discrimination.

Lastly, there are no quarantine requirements upon arrival to Laos, as the country has done away with all special provisions pertaining to the health crisis that had remained in force throughout 2022. Effectively, we’re witnessing a return to 2019 entry guidelines, including the reinstatement of visa-waiver agreements and visas on-arrival.

Do Americans Need A Visa To Enter Laos?

In short, yes, but the visa application process couldn’t be simpler.

American citizens can travel to Laos without requesting a visa in advance, but they must apply for one upon landing at one of the authorized points of entry, such as the Wattay International Airport. Applications are made on-site and tourist visas are normally issued for 30 days for a fee of USD $35, though they may be extended for a further 60 days upon request.

Alternatively, U.S. passport holders are eligible to apply for an e-Visa before departure through the official website, in order to avoid unnecessary queuing at the airport. Other than visa procedures and carrying a passport valid for at least six months, tourists are exempt from presenting any health declaration, or disclosing their vaccination status.

In sum, all of the below applies to international travelers arriving in Laos:
- No mandatory vaccination
- No pre-departure, on-arrival, or post-arrival testing
- No health declaration forms to be completed prior to flying
- No quarantine
Within the country, some Covid measures are still enforced, such as social distancing and mask wearing in certain premises, though the severity of requirements may vary across the country depending on infection levels. Once in Laos, foreigners are advised to follow all rules set out by local authorities, even when travel restrictions have been lifted.

Before the reopening, only fully vaccinated travelers were allowed to enter Laos test-free. The unvaccinated were required to undergo an ATK (Antigen) test 48 hours before departure. Since December 28, however, all travelers are treated equally irrespective of immunization status, nationality, and country of departure.

Is Laos Worth Visiting?

Despite its lack of sea access and colder temperatures, Laos is a Southeast Asian gem deserving of your attention. A mountainous territory rich in nature and famous for its distinct multi-cultural character, torn between centuries-old Buddhist traditions and the legacy of French colonialism, it can be a surprising, and rather unusual, cultural destination for 2023.

We like unusual.

Vientiane, the capital, is home to the That Luang monument, where Buddha’s breastbone is reportedly kept, French-inspired architecture and communist-era landmarks. Elsewhere in the tiny country, visitors will find grand waterfalls, river islands, elephant reserves, and a quaint, sparsely-populated countryside virtually unspoiled by mankind.

Lastly, Laos is a country packed with historical ruins and pilgrimage sites. One of the holiest is Wat Phu, a UNESCO-protected archaeological complex dating back to the 5th century and originally built as a Hindu temple. Today, it is open for tourists for a negligible fee of 50,000 LAK, or only US $2.88, and it is totally worth the two-and-a-half journey from Vientiane.
