Who wouldn’t want to go to Greece?

Well, if you ask this past summer’s tourists, perhaps a lot, as they all but melted in the sweltering heat!

But that’s not the point here, as we have turned our calendars to fall.

The point is that France has a secret Mediterranean getaway rivaling Greece’s glorious islands with its own.

The Mediterranean in general is never a bad idea, but you should know the entirety of options before booking your next dreamy vacation.

Greece? Italy? Maybe Cyprus or Malta? Or perhaps skipping the all-too-familiar Eiffel Tower by diving into France’s gorgeous sunny island of Corsica instead?

Where Med Vibes Meet A New Take On French Culture

French culture spreads far and wide, even beyond its vast borders.

From Canada’s vibrant cities to South America’s French Guyana to North America’s lesser-known slice of French paradise, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, you don’t have to roam the busy streets of Paris to get your French fix.

Corsica, on the other hand, is the best of both worlds.

You get the feel for France while biding time in one of the prettiest islands in Europe, yet overshadowed by the household names of its alluring neighbors.

You can leaf the fall foliage lined streets and sweater weather back home, Corsica is for those who didn’t get enough summer sun and sand.

The island is truly stunning, where you’ll forget all about the bucket-list islands of Greece or anywhere else pinned on your map.

Boasting year-round weather pleasantries, fall is no different. According to the Irish Sun, expect temps to hover around an idyllic 70 degrees.

Corsica’s waters are crystal clear for swimming and shine blue from a distance, perhaps from one of the island’s numerous lovely restaurant patios or hotel balconies.

If you’re missing a sense of city life, Corsica’s capital and main port, Bastia, has you covered.

While nothing like Paris in terms of size, the pint-sized seaside exudes Old World charm, brimming with timeless cobblestone streets and quintessential French cafes.

It also provides epic views reminiscent of its Mediterranean counterparts.

Those who’ve visited say you can’t really go wrong visiting any beach wrapping around the 114 miles of shorelines, but Plage de Palombaggia and Plage de Santa Giulia may take the cake with vivid turquoise waters and soft white sand.

Of course, many love wasting away in a lounge chair overlooking the vast sea, but Corsica is also popular with the more adventurous.

Stand-Up paddleboarding is very common, and it includes SUP yoga, snorkeling, and diving.

One of the best spots to do so is Scandola Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where one recent visitor claimed, “The most amazing place to visit in Corsica”.

Captivating History And Divine Food (With Italian Flair)

You may not know whether to say ‘Bonjour!’ or ‘Ciao!’, but that’s beside the point. Corsica boasts multiple captivating historical sites throughout the island, ranging from architectural marvels and delightful cobbled streets to old citadels perched on the beach.

Not to mention the storybook villages dispersed throughout the mountains with awe-inspiring hilltop villas and traditional artisan markets. In other words, pack your walking shoes!

But, if there’s one aspect most of us travel to Europe for, it’s food. Especially, with such culinary icons as France and Italy.

The same way Bozcaada leans more Greek and Malta leans more Italian, the same goes for Corsica, while not being a complete Sicilian copycat.

Menus here showcase a blend of Mediterranean influences, but mostly a mix of French and Italian delights, especially when it comes to decadent seafood and wine.

Start off with a classic Corsican appetizer of Acciughe alla Planca, followed by a plate of Cannelloni accompanied by a glass of local wine, or perhaps sharing an immensely rich charcuterie board.

We all know California’s staples – San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, among a select few other trendy treasures along the coast.

The Golden State has sure made a name for itself in recent years, finding itself on the wrong side of headlines in many cases.

While locals have been up in arms over major cities transforming into a real-life Zombieland, vacationers are still flocking to the West Coast.

Away from the hustle and bustle of California’s household names lies one region nobody ever seems to talk about, but it’s slowly garnering national attention.

Home to vivid blue lakes waiting to be explored, this relatively undiscovered region is California’s ultimate place to unwind this fall.

Convict Lake: California’s New Lake Town Darling

Ever been disappointed visiting a trendy new place that didn’t hit the mark?

Well, you don’t have to worry about that with Convict Lake, California’s top hidden gem, according to Cheapism.

Normally, your Golden State lake escape would be the resort-lined town of Lake Tahoe or perhaps the SoCal’s serene getaway, Big Bear.

As fall begins to transform landscapes worldwide, Convict Lake and the surrounding area are no different, seeing a rush of colors matched by its vivid blue waters.

Truly out in the wild, away from touristy eyesores, there may be no more authentic place in California to unwind in such an untouched natural setting.

Those who frequent the picturesque lake love to go trout fishing, take scenic hikes through the lush forestry, or lay camp under the stars.

And yes, there are plentiful cozy cabins to rent, or you can opt for the one resort here, the rightfully named Convict Lake Resort, an upscale lodge offering fun boat rides, kayaks, and even horseback riding.

Fun fact: Convict Lake earned its unique name after a group of inmates escaped prison in the 1800s. This resulted in a shootout and the eventual capture of the runaway prisoners. So much for Alcatraz!

In no particular order, visitors have a multitude of crystal-clear lakes, such as:
- Silver Lake
- Mono Lake (includes two volcanic islands!)
- June Lake
- Lake Mary
- Duck Lake
- Lake Mamie (4.9 rating on Google!)
This is just scratching the surface, and many of these unheard-of getaways offer relaxing resorts and nearby cabins to enjoy your downtime in pure serenity.

One such place is June Lake, as listed above.

This gorgeous lake town nestled in the Eastern wing of the Sierra Nevada Mountains boasts stunning views from a variety of hiking trails, a charming town center, and even better stays, like the Double Eagle Resort & Spa.

Mammoth: Not Just A Winter Wonderland

If there’s a claim to fame for this side of California, it’s certainly Mammoth (shortened for Mammoth Lakes) – a popular ski destination come winter.

Mammoth has its own flair in the other 3 seasons, however.

Right now makes for an awesome fall escape as well, where just this month, United began their seasonal service to Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop (BIH) under an hour away.

Before the mountains gleam white, you can take advantage of stunning fall blooms with a mix of golds, crimsons, and oranges.

You won’t need to pack your winter coat just yet, as the temperatures are much milder, allowing you to enjoy the crisp mountain air.

Better yet, many of Mammoth’s popular winter resorts are discounted for the off-season. For example, the luxe Westin Monache Resort is $257 in mid-October compared to nearly $400 in mid-December.

Deep in the heart of Arkansas, hugged by scenic mountains, winding waterways, and charming small towns, lies a historic city that is too often overlooked against the usual mainstays of the South.

Being the most notable destination in Arkansas, Little Rock is one of those cities big in size with a small town feel.

However, there’s far more to Arkansas than the pretty riverfront skyline and fresh home-cookin’. Beyond the city life lies some truly astounding nature, living up to the ‘Natural State’ motto.

There’s one city that particularly thrives in the fall months, boasting the oldest National Park in the country and some off-the-wall ways to relax, making Hot Springs a truly unique getaway.

Not Your Average Water Destination

If you’ve never been to Hot Springs, you can probably imagine how its name came about.

Yes, Hot Springs’ hot springs are a big hit, drawing in tourists to soak in the nearly 150-degree waters.

While a heatwave rages through multiple states, and even Death Valley has seen record-breaking temperatures, there’s no better way to enjoy off-the-charts thermometers than nature’s jacuzzi.

Many travelers are still in search of sun and sand even in the fall, but visiting Hot Springs is a different kind of experience, and it is drawing rave reviews!

Hot Springs is located in Arkansas’ lush Ouachita Mountains, where there’s more to do than you might suspect in a city of less than 40,000 residents.

From scenic trails and thermal springs for outdoor enthusiasts, historic bathhouses for the ultimate relaxing spa day, and an underrated food scene, Hot Springs is more than meets the eye in Little Rock’s big shadow.

Move Over Yellowstone! This Is America’s Oldest National Park

Yellowstone may be the first designated U.S. National Park, but Hot Springs National Park has been around far longer.

Initially established as federally protected land, Yellowstone may have beaten Hot Springs to the punch of official ‘designation ‘National Park’ status, but Hot Springs has had a seat at the table for nearly 2 centuries and was recently hyped up by National Geographic.

As September has arrived in the blink of an eye, expect the same with the area’s rush of fall colors.

A burst of vibrant reds and rustic oranges tend to arrive mid-October, hitting their stride well before Thanksgiving.

But as gorgeous as this park may be to explore in search of the perfect sweater weather photo-op, it’s the 47 thermal springs that are the real draw.

As the old adage goes, “there must be something in the water”…well, in this case it’s true.

Hot Springs is very proud of their thermal waters therapeutic properties, creating an entire tourism around it.

While you cannot directly soak in the springs, there are ample ways to experience the region’s pure waters.

Hot Springs’ Historic Bathhouses

Ever been to a bathhouse? I have, and what an experience! My first time was in Istanbul at a traditional Turkish bathhouse.

First, I walked in to the wrong locker room (oops!), then I thought I was going to faint in the sauna, followed by an odd massage from another man where I still to this day have no idea why he had to undress with me, but I digress…

Cultural differences are certailnly real, but no need to worry about any awkwardness here as Hot Springs bathhouses are the cream of the crop and undoubtedly the top attraction.

In fact, there’s a whole district dedicated to them – Bathhouse Row. This is the best place to reap the benefits of Hot Springs, all while pampering yourself on the ultimate fall retreat.

Not your average spa day, you’ll find yourself taking part in a variety of water-related activities dating back to the 1830’s, along with massages, mud wraps, and facials.

Trust the process to soak in the natural minerals of the nearby springs. The most unique is Hotel Hale, the longest standing bathhouse originating in 1892.

Here, you can enjoy the thermal waters without having to step foot outside of your hotel room! Simply relax in your tub as water flows directly from the National Park springs.

Tip: Look for free parking at 128 Exchange St.

Home-Cooked Southern Comfort

Southern hospitality is the real deal. You’ll know it when you come across it, and it’s definitely not in New York City!

Throughout the South, there are some incredible food cities, such as New Orleans, Austin, Memphis, and Charleston, but many fly well under the radar – Hot Springs being one of them.

Don’t sleep on Arkansas’ local delights like fried pies. And yes, it’s totally okay to eat dessert first!

The barbecue scene is out of this world with generational favorites like McClard’s Bar-B-Q Restaurant.

The Thai Capital Is The 4th Most Popular City Worldwide

Bangkok has always been a go-to destination for backpackers exploring Southeast Asia due to its lower prices compared to most national capitals, a wide range of attractions, and lively social scene, but now it’s been officially named one of the leading tourist destinations worldwide.

According to a survey published by eDreams Odigeo, an important travel company, the Thai capital is the 4th most popular tourist city right now, behind London, Paris, and New York, and the highest-charting Asian hub on the list.

This is further proof Thailand as a whole is surging in popularity with international visitors, as Bangkok is the main entry point into the country, as well as its largest cultural center, home to a plethora of historical temples, ethnic districts, and entertainment zones.

Among Bangkok’s most famous landmarks are the Grand Palace, an important symbol of the traditional Kingdom of Thailand, the only one in Southeast Asia not to have been colonized by European powers, the imposing Wat Arun, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Beautiful Off-Path Sites

Thailand’s trendiness is not only linked to all-time tourist favorites like Bangkok, overdeveloped Phuket, or the adult entertainment capital that is Pattaya: beyond the most obvious points of interest, there is an entire undiscovered country Westerners are only now getting acquainted with.

Off-path tourism is a leading trend in a post-crisis world, especially now that the tourist hordes are back, yet fortunately for the crowd-wary visitor, Thailand certainly has no shortage of lesser-known gems where they can still escape the madness.

One of them is the mysterious Ko Kut island, which unlike Phuket, has not been essentially dollarized nor overrun by Americans and Europeans.

It remains very much an unspoiled Thai island at heart, with pristine nature reserves, unruffled beaches, and undisturbed fishing villages.

90 miles from Bangkok, Lopburi is yet another coastal town that does not often feature on tourists’ wishlists, though it should: it is mentioned by legendary Italian explorer Marco Polo in his Travels book, and it boasts a high concentration of temples and shrines.

Thailand Is Hugely Affordable

We know Americans are heading en masse to Cancun, Punta Cana, and the wider Caribbean this winter, but these are far from being affordable sunny getaways by any standard.

Hotel rates in Cancun can easily go as high as $500 per night during the peak travel season, and across the Caribbean as a whole, the hospitality industry is almost exclusively geared towards big spenders and luxury tourism, making it less attractive to budget-conscious travelers.

Thailand, on the other hand, is a budget traveler’s paradise, with lower prices across the board, from accommodation down to transportation to food in local restaurants.

According to BudgetYourTrip, visitors can spend as low as $30 per day during their stay in the country.

A mid-range vacation for two people in Thailand costs on average $1,178, including two or three-star hotel rates, local transportation, and even sightseeing, making it one of the least-expensive tropical destinations globally.

Americans Don’t Need Visas To Enter Thailand

Southeast Asia may be an incredibly popular destination among Westerners, but it is by no means the easiest place to go, nor the least bureaucratic.

A majority of countries in the subregion still have pretty strict visa rules, either requiring Americans to obtain a pre-authorized entry permit or even applying for a visa upon arriving – Thailand, on the other hand, allows them to visit hassle-free.

Landing in the kingdom, American passport holders can stay up to 30 days without applying for a visa, or an e-Visa in advance.

This means, as a U.S. citizen, you are free to book the next flight out to Bangkok without hesitation or fear your entry authorization will not arrive in your inbox on time.

Additionally, Thailand is now considering extending visa-free stays to up to 90 days for some nationalities, starting with Europeans.

While this does not yet apply to Americans, we wouldn’t be surprised if the United States is soon added to the 3-month visa-waver list.

While the idea of sun, sand, and surf is very appealing during the wintertime, sometimes it’s actually kind of nice to embrace the true meaning of the season.

That means getting hunkered down in a cozy cabin in front of a roaring fire while the snow falls on the mountains and pine trees outside.

It’s a dreamy winter travel vision in its own right, and luckily the United States has some of the best places on earth to live out this fantasy.

Perhaps the most popular, and with very good reason, is the state of Colorado.

Whether it’s skiing, fine dining, luxury wellness spas, or just hanging out in hipster mountain towns, this winter wonderland has so much to offer…

Winter Sports Paradise

It’s well-known that Colorado is home to some of the best skiing locations on the planet, with towns such as Vail, Aspen, and Breckenridge among the favorites.

There are more than 1,500 miles of ski slopes in the state, served by 28 ski resorts and over 300 ski lifts – so even when it gets busy, you’ll always be able to find somewhere to go.

It’s not only downhill winter sports that are unrivaled here; you can also partake in snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at one of the many Nordic Centers in Colorado, as well as try your hand at dog sledding, snow tubing, or even snowmobiling.

Despite the cold, Colorado boasts many sunny days in winter and very dry snow, so being out in it all day doesn’t feel like a chore.

An Appetite For Après

After any amount of winter sports, you’re going to be ready to eat.

But one of the great things about Colorado is that it’s fast-becoming a recognized foodie destination, so you could go there just for the food if skiing isn’t your thing.

Boulder, Aspen, and Vail are all home to some incredible restaurants, with brewhouse-style grub being one of the main things they excel at.

The state even has a growing number of Michelin starred restaurants for those seeking luxury dining.

Scenery Like Nowhere Else

About half of Colorado is mountainous, making it a place where breathtaking scenery is just part and parcel of being there.

While some of the main hiking trails may be a little less accessible in winter, there are still plenty of places to catch a glimpse of a stunning vista at this time of year.

The valley town of Breckenridge is best viewed from Boreas Pass Road, while Pikes Peak Summit near Colorado Springs can still be viewed from Garden of the Gods in winter.

Another great sight to witness is the Colorado National Monument, which you can check out from several different lookout points around Monument Canyon.

Ensure that you are prepared for winter driving conditions and keep an eye on snowfall in the weather forecast if you’re on a sightseeing trip in a car.

Mountain Towns Are A Vibe

There’s just something about being in a mountain town that gets your inner party animal going.

One place where you can enjoy the nightlife long after the sun has gone down is Colorado Springs, which is predicted to be one of the trending travel destinations in 2024 according to a recent study by Airbnb.

Then there’s the state’s biggest city, Denver, which is known for its great music scene, welcoming bars, and a large number of independent breweries.

Warm Up The Cold Winter

The wellness scene in Colorado is excellent, and one of the best ways to experience it is by staying at one of the many amazing hot springs.

There are almost 30 different hot springs in the state covering everything from ultimate luxury to family-friendly resorts – all of which will leave you feeling recharged and cleansed thanks to their warm waters that are naturally rich in minerals.

While most of the accessories were admittedly better-suited for women, I still had to see what was available 😂. They also plan to add more accessories for men in the future.

Endless Things To Do

Fort Lauderdale is packed FULL of things to do, and that’s if you even feel the need to leave the W!

The W Fort Lauderdale has the perfect place to soak up the sun in style on its rooftop WET deck, complete with an amazing pool, cabanas, and staff walking around constantly to make sure your drink is always full.

Another cool thing about staying at the W Fort Lauderdale is the events they have at night. We were able to take part in cocktails with a live artist and music, and a really fun game night.

And don’t worry, if all you want to do is rest and relax, the AWAY spa is just an elevator ride away from your room. I’m still dreaming about the AMAZING massage I got while staying there.

Looking to get out of the hotel for a while? Fort Lauderdale won’t disappoint. Go for a bike ride along the beach, go rug-making, try a ton of different foods at Sistrunk Marketplace, or simply walk across the street to the gorgeous beach in front of the W.

If you’re looking for an amazing dinner spot, look no further than Rocco’s Tacos, and don’t leave without trying the freshly made guacamole! This was my favorite dinner of the trip and definitely a place I’ll be visiting again.

After enduring nearly three years of strict restrictions, health mandates, and lockdowns, Americans are desperate to do nothing, log off their socials and escape the chaos of the modern world on their next vacation – even if temporarily. We don’t blame them: as much as we love sightseeing and cultural expeditions, taking a breather is just as important, but where to go on when looking for ultimate relaxation?

Let’s Face It: International Travel Can Be Quite Tiring

Although we have suspected it for months, as the wellness trend continued to grow, new research conducted by Expedia has finally confirmed Americans have a clear preference for the recently-coined ‘nothing-cations’, a neologism used in reference to trips with far more relaxed itineraries where sightseeing and culture aren’t the primary focus.

Out of 4,000 participants, 1360 have reported feeling ‘burned out’ from previous experiences. Whether it’s sleeping at airports to catch the next early flight, worrying about entry restrictions, deciding which attractions to cram into a tight two to three-day stint in a particular city, and that inevitable FOMO, international travel can be quite stressful.

The health crisis and economic instability that ensued only added to their difficulties: a WHO-assisted study carried out in early 2022 came to the conclusion that mental health concerns have skyrocketed in recent years. More specifically, the feeling of doom and gloom associated with COVID has led to a 25% increase in anxiety and depression rates.

Ever since COVID started, it feels as if we are stuck in a vicious cycle of bleak news, whether it’s the virus itself, a war in Europe, the energy crisis, or the global economic upheaval that’s led to a staggering decrease in the purchasing power of middle-income families. It’s hardly surprising travelers have had it with the state of affairs and want a break from it.

To put it simply, it’s that dolce far niente, lying on a beach listening to the crashing of the Pacific waves in a coastal location, not adhering to strict plans on where to go or what to see next, that travelers crave the most. Cultural trips are still extremely popular in 2023, but the fact that 34% of those surveyed simply want to unwind and have some free time can’t be overlooked.

Where To Go For Ultimate Relaxation?

Quoting Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group Brands Public Relations, ‘for most travelers, getting the most out of their next vacation means setting aside dedicated time for nothing’. Beyond the 34%, an even greater number of interviewees – 3840 people or 96% – reported they intend to spend at least some days of their next vacation ‘doing absolutely nothing’.

As Expedia experts confirm, beach destinations are leading booking trends this winter, not only due to the colder temperatures in the Northern hemisphere, a major factor behind the temporary mass migration of Americans to the Global South, but also their ‘nothing-cation’ value. Expedia lists up to 7 wellness retreats where fatigued travelers are able to slow down, soak up more nature and just wish their worries away:
- Kauai, a Hawaiian island boasting emerald peaks and pristine beaches
- Costa Rica, a Central American country offering sweeping jungle views and access to both the Pacific and the Caribbean seas
- Fiji, an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean famous for its remoteness and teal-colored seas
- Nevis, the smaller of the St. Kitts and Nevis island duo, where the landscape is dominated by palm tree-lined beaches
- Koh Samui, Thailand’s mountainous, second-largest island stacked with tropical jungles and Buddhist temples
- Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost tip, much more laid-back and quaint in nature than the busy, landmark-packed Lisbon or Porto
- Sanibel, a Floridian island where cycling routes always seem to end up on a white sand beach
Despite not being mentioned on this list specifically, Los Cabos in Mexico has recently been named Mexico’s number one wellness destination, recognized for a plethora of spas, wellness centers, and posh resorts in tranquil settings, far away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown areas, and where customer service is always top-notch.

2023 Is The Year Of Wellness

As assessed by Expedia, 47% of Americans would like to start off 2021 with a trip ‘to look forward to’, with up to 31% attributing the urge to go on a ‘nothing-cation’ to feeling anxious and 34% to the poor January weather. Parents of children aged 4 years or younger are the group most likely to report post-vacation burnout (49% against 34% of nonparents).

Nevertheless, 62% have deemed the sporadic lie-in days, where they’ll either read a book or stay inside binging the latest Netflix hit series while ordering room service their ‘favorite part’ – but you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on an all-inclusive trip to Mexico, or check into ultra-luxurious Maldives resort to kick back and start enjoying life:
