UAE Removes All Travel Restrictions

The United Arab Emirates is the latest country to drop all entry requirements and remove internal COVID-related restrictions.

As of November 7, this Gulf state finally joins more than 120 countries that have gotten rid of travel restrictions, returning to normal travel.

The UAE is a popular tourist destination in the Middle East, with Dubai being the top place to visit in the country.

But up until this recent change, the UAE maintained strict entry requirements and internal restrictions that dissuaded many travelers from visiting for the past two and a half years.

In order to enter the country, travelers were required to comply with a myriad of restrictions in place.

However, as of November 7, all of these rules have been dropped.

What Does This Mean For Travelers?

Previously, visitors to the UAE were required to demonstrate proof of vaccination or present a negative PCR test result taken within 48 hours of their arrival in order to enter the country.

Within the country a variety of COVID-related restrictions were in effect.

Tropical Storm Nicole Is Headed For Florida: Airports Closing and Cruises Rerouting

The National Hurricane Center issued a warning that tropical storm Nicole will likely become a hurricane by Wednesday and is making its way towards Florida’s east coast. Airports, theme parks and cruise lines are on alert or have implemented precautions with Orlando, Orlando Sanford, Melbourne and Daytona Beach International Airports all planning to suspend operations by Wednesday afternoon.

Tropical storm Nicole began building in the Atlantic Ocean as a hybrid storm earlier in the week, but by Tuesday had formed into a tropical storm. Nicole is expected to move towards the islands of the Bahamas before strengthening into a Category 1 hurricane and then meeting Florida’s southeast coast by late Wednesday or early Thursday. Its damage could also extend to Southwest Florida, which has already been devastated by Hurricane Ian.

AccuWeather reports that “a water level rise of 3-6 feet is forecast with locally higher levels, and that rise will occur not only on waters near where Nicole makes landfall along the central portion of the Florida east coast but in areas hundreds of miles farther north”

This is the second time in six weeks that Florida has had to brace for a potential hurricane and if Nicole makes landfall, it would be a rarity, since only one hurricane has ever made landfall after November in continental US, according to hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach.

What Travel Has Been Disrupted So Far?

Multiple Florida airports have decided to close on Wednesday; Orlando and Orlando Sanford International Airports will be suspending operations at 4pm; Melbourne Orlando International Airport will be closing at 2pm; and Daytona Beach International Airport will be shutting earlier at 12.30pm.

Major airlines have issued travel alerts for multiple airports in the eastern Caribbean and Florida, stating that customers who were impacted by Nicole would be able to rebook airfares under certain conditions. Currently, American Airlines has listed 20 airports as a travel alert; United has listed 8; and Delta has listed 15. It is recommended to check your airline for the latest travel advisory.

Cruise lines have already reacted and altered itineraries. Both Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty and Disney’s Wish skipped a planned visit to Nassau in the Bahamas and spent a day at sea instead. They will now be stopping in Cozumel, Mexico instead of their planned private cays.

Meanwhile Carnival Elation, Norwegian Getaway and Disney Dream all skipped their private island itineraries and opted for a day at sea or another destination. Royal Caribbean’s International’s Quantum of the Seas, which was headed to Florida via the Bahamas from New Jersey has redirected to Haiti.

At the time of writing, Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld had not made plans to close their theme parks but said they were monitoring the situation closely. Other attractions such as Central Florida Zoo and Brevard Zoo have decided to close Wednesday and Thursday as a precaution.

What Is Nicole’s Predicted Path?

Nicole is currently moving near or over the islands in the Bahamas today and will be approaching Florida’s east coast between West Palm Beach and Cape Canaveral by late Wednesday or early Thursday, according to AccuWeather. It is advised by experts to not only consider the direct path as a point of impact, because a storm of this size can wreak havoc wide and can move through parts of the state for 48 hours.

“These things don’t have to be exactly right over the top of you to make it the worst night of the year for you,” said AccuWeather forecast operations director Dan DePodwin.

AccuWeather suggested that Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia and parts of the Northeast could also experience 2-4 inches of rain, with mountainous regions in the North Carolina and Virginia potentially experiencing flooding by Thursday evening or Friday.

At the time of writing a hurricane warning has been issued for a large portion of Florida’s east coast and the northwestern Bahamas, and a tropical storm warning has been issued for northwestern Florida coast and well as some of the Georgia coast.

Frontier Airlines Adds New National And International Routes With Fares Starting At $69

Ready to fly to great destinations for a very low price? Frontier Airlines is expanding its network and recently announced new national and international routes. Travelers will get more low-cost options for exciting and practical terminals starting services right away.

Through multiple press releases, the American ultra-low-cost carrier explained the new services and shared the introductory fares for customers. These are the main routes announced:
- From Atlanta to Nassau, San Salvador, and Kingston with introductory fares starting at $99.
- From Chicago Midway to Miami and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood starting at $69.
- From Denver to West Palm Beach starting at $69.
- From Orlando to Guadalajara starting at $109.
The introductory fares are valid for non-stop travel, will be available until November 10 at midnight, are subject to availability, and blackout dates apply. Travelers must carefully read all terms and conditions, and book fast.

Just a few weeks ago, Frontier also announced non-stop flights to Jamaica. With these new routes now Americans have more options to enjoy the warm weather in Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean for Fall and Winter.

Frontier will be serving 37 destinations from Atlanta by the end of the month. Besides these three new routes, the carrier will add San José in Costa Rica as a destination within the next few days.

Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial at Frontier Airlines, said: “Frontier Airlines is thrilled to become the second largest international carrier at ATL—and the only ultra-low fare carrier providing international service from Atlanta.”

This is a particularly worrying statement, seeing that in the current climate, up to 48% of adults aged 20-40 in the United States shop on their phones – a far higher number than the global average of 34%. The data, obtained from a survey of 3,250 American customers carried out by Klarna, is precisely what has analysts concerned:

Drip pricing is a term employed in the industry to refer to the infamous add-on fees on flights. Pymnts.com, a website dedicated to analyzing the role of payments in new tech, the majority of travel service purchases were made on a mobile device in February 2022. As proved by Pymnts.com, more than half (51.4%) of travel purchases in the U.S. were made on mobile in February of this year.

As Santana puts it, shopping on the phone influences customers to accept whatever extra charge has been applied to the original product, as re-starting the entire process, a decision that usually entails losing all information provided, or opening up a new tab to find cheaper options, is perceived as time-consuming and a bigger hassle (in a small screen).

Booking flights can take several long minutes, as you add your name, personal information, passport details and make selections, so giving up halfway through over the cost of ‘add-ons’, under the notion there is no way to circumvent them, and that full-service airlines are always the costlier pick, is discouraging for many.

Customers End Up Paying More Finalizing Purchases On Their Mobiles

The researchers were surprised to learn that, even after the final price had risen, customers buying tickets on their phones were extremely ‘unwilling’ to compare different providers: ‘consumers perceive high search costs associated with starting their decision process over, and they think they will save less money than they actually will’, added Santana.

Just think for a sec: how many times have you switched between apps when booking a trip? There is the airline’s own app to account for, then there’s either Booking.com or AirBnB when it comes to accommodation, the calendar app, where you’ll need to check your own availability, and of course, flight-search tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner, among others.

That is a lot of tabs active on your phone browser simultaneously, and no matter how fast you are with your fingers, the chances of overlooking relevant information, or even forgetting that you had a secondary tab for comparison open in the first place is substantially higher. On larger screens, the decision-making process tends to be more comfortable.

In being comfortable, it may help shoppers think clearly before reaching for their wallets. There is an even earlier study to corroborate this: back in 2018, the Journal of Marketing analyzed customer behavior from more than one million sessions on a shopping website, and their results inform us those who concluded purchases from their phones paid higher fees.

Additionally, the higher conversion rate was far more noticeable with higher-priced products, a category comprising flight tickets. Concluding, Santana advised her fellow travelers to ‘always shop for travel on a desktop’: ‘I like to have several tabs open at once and toggle between them to make sure I understand price differences and drivers across firms‘.

Speeding up security screening at the airport in the United States just got cheaper! The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recently announced that the enrollment fee for the program TSA PreCheck has been reduced.

According to the information presented by the agency, passengers interested in applying for the TSA PreCheck program will now pay $78 instead of $85 for the five-year membership. And those who want to renew their membership are required to pay $70 through the online process—the renewal fee stays the same.

The update arrives right before the busy holiday season. TSA Administrator David Pekoske said: “For individuals and families with plans to fly this holiday season, now is the time to enroll or renew in TSA PreCheck.”

TSA PreCheck Benefits

To enroll in the program for the first time, U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents can request an appointment at one of the enrollment centers nationwide —there are over 500— where they will be interviewed and will have to provide biometric and biographic information. Once the interview is over, travelers should receive their Known Traveler Number (KTN) within less than a week. With the KTN customers get identified and allowed to use the special fast lanes.

- You do not need to remove shoes, belts, or light jackets, and you can keep electronics and 3-1-1 compliant liquids in your bag.
- The membership lasts 5 years, once the traveler is enrolled, they can easily renew online.
- Some airlines and credit cards offer discounts or even offer customers the service for free. For example, United Airlines allows customers in their frequent flier program to use United MileagePlus to cover the application fee.
- Children 12 and under can join parents or guardians in special TSA PreCheck lines.
Even for travelers who only travel a couple of times a year, it’s a great opportunity to ease the travel experience and avoid long wait times. And certain citizens could already have access to this benefit through their banks or frequent flyer membership programs.

TSA Pre-Check Alternatives

There are other programs that can also speed up the travel experience like Global Entry and Clear. But these can be a little more expensive.

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection that already includes the TSA PreCheck program and adds an extra perk: faster U.S. customs screening. It’s also a great alternative, especially for travelers who enjoy visiting distant lands—not ideal for those traveling only within the U.S. This service cost $100 for five years.

Clear, on the other side, has an annual membership that costs $189. This service does not include TSA PreCheck, is available in over 60 airports and it offers travelers an ultrafast airport security screening since it uses only eyes and fingertips to identify travelers. Clear also recently launched a free service to skip TSA lines using a reservation system at certain airports.

Is $78 Worth It For TSA- Pre Check?

The newly reduced $78 fee for a 5-year membership works out to be just $15.60 per year, which is a very affordable way to clear security faster. If you fly even 2 times per year, that’s only $6.30 per visit. Those who fly more than 6 times a year, the membership works out to just cents per visit, making it super valueable.

Argentina’s New Tourist Exchange Rate Will Effectively Double Your Cash Back

Traveling to Argentina has just become even more enticing with Argentina’s government just launching a new tourist exchange rate, which effectively doubles your cash as you make purchases. As of last Friday, tourists who do not live in Argentina or do not have an Argentinian credit or debit card will be able to access a rate similar to the ‘Dolar MEP’ (Mercado Electrónico de Pagos) exchange rate, which almost equates to the illegal ‘Dolar Blue’ rate that tourists typically access for cash.

Gone are the days of asking your local friends to exchange a big wad of cash for you, or meeting some sketchy character in an alley to do it for you. You’re now able to do it yourself, just by making the purchase on your credit card.

Last week, the Dolar MEP rate was around 292 pesos per dollar, while the official rate was at 158 pesos per dollar. Exchanging by the MEP rate gets you almost double the pesos for your dollar as opposed to the official rate that is applied to overseas payment methods.

“Effectively the measure introduces an exchange rate 90 percent superior to the official one applying to all tourist expenses in the country, including excursions, meals and tourist packages,” wrote The Buenos Aires Times.

How Did The Exchange Rate Work Before?

If a tourist was paying for an expense on a credit or debit card, the cost of this would be converted to the official exchange rate, which was used by banks.

The Buenos Aires Times explains, if you were charged 10,000 pesos on your debit or credit card at the official exchange rate of 155 pesos, this would equate to US $64.30. Whereas if banks had access to the MEP exchange rate, this would be equivalent to US$34.24; saving you half of what you would have paid in US dollars.

This rate will apply to anything tourists are paying for on their credit cards, including hotel rooms, restaurants, tours, attractions, cinema tickets, etc.

Previously tourists in Argentina would be exchanging their money for cash at illegal and unofficial locations at the Dolar Blue rate to avoid the official exchange rate. The Dolar Blue rate is considered closer to the MEP exchange rate, so with Argentina’s introduction of an exchange rate closer to this; tourists will be able to stop carrying around so much cash and use their credit and debit cards without being penalized.

How Does The Exchange Rate Work Now?

The new process for exchange rates means that travelers can now pay in pesos on their cards and their money will be converted from dollars into a fixed exchange rate for tourists, instead of the official rate. Credit card companies will receive the dollars and will have five days to convert them using the MEP exchange rate via the financial markets, but credit cards can also gather a commission from the transaction. The new rules have already kicked in, so you can start exchanging at this more generous rate today.

Why Is Argentina Doing This Now?

Argentina has a spiderweb of different exchange rates, which can be confusing for tourists visiting the country for the first time. With unofficial exchange rates, such as the Dolar Blue, offering more lucrative deals for tourists exchanging their money, this has created a more cash-based tourism industry. According to Buenos Aires Times, around US $200 – 250 million is pumped through the country via tourism, but only $30 million of this comes through official channels.

As the country is headed towards 100% inflation rate, the government has been tasked to find a solution that will encourage tourists to put back money in Argentina’s financial system and assist in the post-pandemic recovery. Officials also believe this will provide more safety and efficiency to tourists coming to Argentina, while also formalizing the sector and putting pressure on the Dolar Blue.

“The measure was much awaited. Domestic tourism had been favoured by Previaje but incoming tourism has been lagging in its post-pandemic recovery and this will be a good booster,” said Gustavo Hani, president of the Argentine Chamber of Tourism. “It helps foreign tourists to encourage them to use their credit or debit cards; it makes things safer and more predictable for them.

Lucky for us, local travel magazine Despegar has ranked the ten most popular within the country, based on the preferences of Mexicans themselves. The list, which comprises ten pueblos, includes some old favorites… and a few surprises.

These ‘Pueblos Magicos‘ are among the trendiest destinations south of the border right now. Packed with centuries-old monuments and home to a rich heritage, they are recognized by Mexican authorities for being sites of outstanding cultural beauty and for their contribution to Mexico’s national identity.

We could certainly spend a lifetime traveling along the ‘magical route’ and unearthing all of its treasures, and the list below is an indication of where to start:

Mexico’s Top Magical Town Is A Small Town On The Pacific Coast

No one knows Mexico better than Mexicans themselves, and according to Despegar Mexico, whose editors have compiled a top ten of their favorite Pueblos, the number one town isn’t the colonial jewel of Taxco, nor Baja California Sur’s charming Todos Santos: instead, an unfamiliar, off the beaten path coastal village took the crown.

With the exception of Taxco, Tequila, and perhaps the up-and-coming Bacalar, these tourism centers would rarely feature on the average American’s Mexico bucket list. A prime example of that is Mazunte, the leading destination situated on the Southern Pacific Coast and known for its sandy, over-development-free beaches.

Here, guests who are also surfers can catch some of the most epic waves in Mexico, visit a turtle sanctuary, where conservation and rehabilitation work is carried out, and even whale-watch. Unlike others ranking lower on the list, Mazunte’s strongest assets are its pristine nature and laid-back atmosphere, qualities the rivaling Tulum no longer enjoys.

In fact, Tulum, perhaps America’s best-loved Magical Town, misses the list entirely. At number two, Pátzcuaro has attained prestige as an ancient hub, founded as early as the year 1320 by the Purépecha people. Naturally, from the arrival of the Spaniards, the aboriginal civilization and its structures were toppled in favor of colonial architecture and Christian symbols.

Today, this city in Michoacán is still home to a well-preserved historical district, with your usual cobblestone streets, Iberian-inspired churches, and red-tile roofs. Rounding out the top three, the Pacific village of Sayulita is famous for its surfing scene – much like Mazunte – marine wildlife, and the indigenous Huichol people.

Colonial Cities Make Up Most Of The Top Ten

As expected, the rest of the top ten is dominated by colonial settlements and landmarks, some dating as far back as the 1500s, such as the number ten-charting Xitlita. The aforementioned Taxco and Bacalar are the fourth and seventh most popular, respectively, while the equally renowned Tequila in Jalisco enters at number six.

Looking at this selection, one thing is clear to us: Mexicans are going where foreigners have not yet taken over and that have managed to retain their unique character. As Despegar reports, these 132 Magical Towns comprise 13% of the tourism offer in Mexico: they have up to 4,675 accommodation providers and 110,697 rooms available collectively.

The alpine town of Arteaga, established following the Spanish Conquest, illustrates this phenomenon: a fast-growing domestic destination, it has earned the nickname of ‘Mexican Switzerland’ due to its quaintness, the snowy peaks that surround it during the winter period, and its wooden cottages – yet many Americans don’t even know it exists.

In the words of Despegar‘s country manager Alejandro Calligaris, ‘it is interesting to see how Mexican travelers seek to explore national destinations that are not necessarily the traditional ones’. Mr. Calligaris believes this helps national tourism ‘diversify’ amid the ongoing threat of over-tourism and promotes Mexico’s ‘cultural richness’.
